VENICE | Catholics across Southwest Florida have come together to lend a helping hand in the short time since an earthquake struck Haiti on Jan. 12. This has been done through raising money, giving personal support and even offering to go to the devastated country to help their brothers and sisters in need, and also through continual prayer.
Each evening at St. Peter the Apostle Parish in Naples, Haitian immigrants gather to share in their sorrow over lost loved ones, their joy for found loved ones, and their hope for a brighter future for their homeland.
Parochial Vicar Father Anthony Chermeil leads an evening prayer service in Creole each night. Both young and old alike fight back tears as the raw emotions of what has happened become too much. Nearly every one of the hundreds who come each night has lost a family member in Haiti, or worse, they still don’t know and may never know.
