Bishop to celebrate Mass honoring Opus Dei founder

A special Mass in honor of Opus Dei’s founder Saint Josemaria Escriva will be celebrated June 26 by Bishop Frank J. Dewane.

Opus Dei is a Catholic institution with a mission to help people turn their work and daily activities into occasions for growing closer to God, for serving others, and for improving society. Opus Dei complements the work of local churches by offering classes, talks, retreats and pastoral care that help people develop their personal spiritual life and apostolate.

The Mass will be 7:30 p.m. June 26, the feast day of Saint Josemaria Escriva, at St. Martha Parish, 200 N. Orange Ave. in Sarasota. Pope John Paul II canonized the saint in 2002, and described him as “the saint of ordinary life.”

Throughout his life, Opus Dei’s founder emphasized the importance of coming closer to God in one’s work and everyday activities.

Saint Josemaria died in 1975 and was beatified in 1992, in St. Peter’s Square. He was canonized in 2002 before a crowd of 350,000.

For more details about Saint Josemaria Escriva or for information about Opus Dei in Florida, write to info@opusdei.org or call Alvaro Blanco at 941-961-0624.

Cardinal Mooney High School in Sarasota has started fielding boys and girls lacrosse teams, with plans for formal competition to begin in the spring of 2009.

Next spring, Cardinal Mooney will enter the West Florida Lacrosse League and play in the Club Division.

Adding lacrosse to Cardinal Mooney’s existing sports lineup of 35 teams and 14 sports is a new venture in many ways. Among the most exciting is that almost half of the students playing lacrosse have not played another high school sport.

The boys team, led by coaches Clayton Wight and Phillip Meyer, has 25 players on its roster. The girls team, led by coaches LeeAnn Fronckowiak and Paula Krupa, consists of 16 players.
