April 2008 Tridentine Mass to be celebrated in Fort MyersPosted: 04.25.08 VENICE | A third parish in the Diocese of Venice will begin celebrating the Tridentine Mass starting May 4. This Mass will be celebrated at Resurrection of Our Lord Parish, 8121 Cypress Lake Drive, Fort Myers, at 5:30 p.m. on the first and third Sundays of each month, said Father James Fryar, a priest in residence at St. Martha Parish in Sarasota. “We received nearly 200 requests for the Tridentine Mass from Fort Myers and Cape Coral parishioners and Father (Stephen E.) McNamara of Resurrection has allowed us to have the Mass at his parish.” With the blessing of Bishop Frank J. Dewane, the Masses were approved. If demand warrants, Father Fryar said it could become a weekly Mass in the future. The Tridentine Mass, celebrated in Latin, was the exclusive liturgy of the church from the mid-1500s until the 1960s. It differs not only in language, but also in ritual from the current novus ordo, or new order Mass. The novus ordo Mass was introduced in 1970 and can be celebrated in a number of languages, including Latin. Father Fryar and all priests from the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter exclusively celebrate the liturgy according to the liturgical books of 1962, the year the last issue of the Tridentine Missal was published. He celebrates the Tridentine Mass at St. Martha Parish and St. Agnes Parish in Naples. For more information, call Resurrection of Our Lord Parish at 239-481-7171. Sisters from diocese head to D.C. for statue dedicationPosted: 04.25.08 Two sisters of the Diocese of Venice will attend the dedication and blessing of the statue of St. Mother Theodore Guerin May 10 in Washington, D.C. St. Mother Theodore Guerin founded the Sisters of Providence of St. Mary-of-the-Woods in Indiana in 1840. The order was set up as a pontifical congregation, which meant the sisters would not be restricted to only one diocese, but be able to practice their ministry of teaching in any diocese in the United States or abroad. Sisters of Providence, their alumnae, friends and relatives from throughout the United States will be in Washington for the event, including the superior general of the congregation, Sister Denise Wilkinson. St. Mother Theodore Guerin is the eighth canonized saint in the United States. She established Catholic schools throughout Indiana and neighboring states. She died in 1856.
