Leaven Conference to focus on water conservation

In the document, “Water, an Essential Element of Life,” the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace states that water management must address the needs of all, particularly those who live in poverty.

Southwest Florida is chronically coping with water issues. What can Catholics and parishes do to more effectively address water conservation?

A team of diocesan environmental justice commission members will give a presentation and host a discussion on water conservation at the 14th annual Leaven Conference March 15.

The event features seminars on various peace and social justice topics, and will be held at San Antonio Parish in Port Charlotte. The keynote speaker will be Sister Helen Prejean, Sisters of St. Joseph of Medaille, author of the book “Dead Man Walking.”

Registration forms for the conference are available online at Leaven Conference. People can also register at their parish offices and at the diocesan Peace and Justice Office at 1000 Pinebrook Road, Venice. For more information, call 941-484-9543 or e-mail peace&justice@dioceseofvenice.org.

Novena to prepare people for Divine Mercy Sunday

Jesus I Trust In You

Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Venice invites Catholics to pray the Divine Mercy Novena starting Good Friday to help them prepare for the feast of Divine Mercy on Sunday, March 30.

The Divine Mercy novena is rooted in the diary of St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, a young nun who lived in Krakow, Poland, in the early 1900s. Sister Faustina had several mystical experiences in which Jesus appeared to her.

The Lord told Sister Faustina that he is mercy itself, that God’s people must also be merciful, and that God’s love is available to all, especially the greatest sinners. Jesus gave the novena to Sister Faustina in 1933.

Copies of the novena can be obtained in the lobby of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, 1301 Center Road, Venice, or by calling 941-492-5001, or from EWTN HERE.

Bishop Verot to present musical

Students from Bishop Verot High School in Fort Myers will present “Once on This Island,” a musical based on Rosa Guy’s novel “My Love, My Love,” March 7-9.

In the story, a group of Caribbean peasants wait out a stormy night by performing a fairy tale about star-crossed lovers. Inherent in this tale are the themes of class distinction and racial prejudice.

The performance will be held in the school’s Anderson Theater. Shows begin at 7:30 p.m. March 7 and 8, and at 2 p.m. March 9.

Tickets will be available at the door. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 14 and under. Proceeds will benefit Hands Together, a Catholic mission in Haiti. A special dinner for alumni and guests will be held before the March 7 performance at 6 p.m. For more information, call 239-274-6780.

St. Francis Xavier to host Seder service

St. Francis Xavier Parish in Fort Myers will hold a Seder service March 1, which celebrates the history of the Jewish people and their Passover journey to freedom as told in the Old Testament. The program and dinner will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the parish hall, 2050 Heitman St., Fort Myers.

Tickets are $15, and carpooling will be available from Sacred Heart Parish in Punta Gorda. For tickets or more information, call Barbara Chamberlain at 941-575-6761.

St. Francis Xavier to present ‘Beauty and the Beast’

Students from St. Francis Xavier School will present Walt Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” April 18-19 at 7 p.m. at the Anderson Theater at Bishop Verot High School, 5598 Sunrise Drive, Fort Myers. General admission tickets are $10 and reserved-seating tickets are $15. Proceeds benefit the St. Francis Xavier School performing arts program. For more information, call 239-334-7707.
