Epiphany School kicks off 50th AnniversaryA ‘Fabulous ’50s Dance’ is led by eighth-graders.
BOB REDDY | FC Posted: 10.08.09 VENICE | Poodle skirts, slicked-back hair, leather jackets and performances by rock stars were just some of the highlights of the Epiphany Cathedral School “Fabulous 50s Dance” in the parish hall Sept. 19. The dance marked the start of a yearlong celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the school, and drew hundreds of students, parents and teachers for a fun night. The ’50s evening was the idea of eighth-grade teacher Stephen Morganelli, who said he wanted an event that would excite the students and parents of Epiphany Cathedral School. “This was a great chance to celebrate 50 years with a dance everyone could enjoy. We never have dances anymore and I thought this would be fun.” The eighth-graders of the school, most dressing in a ’50s-style outfits in keeping with the night’s theme, also performed classic ‘50s music on stage as the younger students sat on the floor in a concert-like setting. Among the highlights was a performance of the Connie Francis song “Lipstick on Your Collar,” and the entertainment portion of the evening ended with all of the eighth-graders getting on stage to sing “We Go Together” from the popular 1970s movie “Grease.” The movie was an inspiration for many of the students and adults at the dance alike, with the women wearing “Pink Ladies” jackets and some guys wearing “T-Birds” jackets, representing the male and female gangs featured in the film. While most of the students dressed in ’50s-style clothing, their parents did as well, some wearing black wigs to emphasize the look they were going for. The parish hall was decorated to include a soda bar, candy store, popcorn machine and tables that included real records and old-style Coca-Cola. Principal Dr. Irene Lynch was thrilled with the event, because goal of the year is to get the students and parents more engaged in the school.
