Rep. Galvano receives ‘Defensor Dignitatis’ award

The Bradenton legislator is honored for his work to protect and insure children.

VENICE | During a luncheon that was part of the annual Catholic Days at the Capitol events, state Rep. Bill Galvano, District 68, Bradenton, received the Florida Catholic Conference Defensor Dignitatis (Defender of Dignity) Award for his ongoing efforts to protect the human dignity of the residents of Florida.

Those in attendance included the bishops of Florida and more than 240 faithful from throughout the seven Catholic dioceses in Florida, including more than 30 from the Diocese of Venice, along with Bishop Frank J. Dewane. Also in attendance was his mother, Betty Galvano, a longtime Catholic Days at the Capitol participant; his sister Mary Galvano, who has sung with the choir at the annual Red Mass in Tallahassee; and his legislative assistant, Kathy Galea.

“I couldn’t be more proud of my brother,” Mary Galvano said. “I truly think that he is blessed and gifted with the Holy Spirit. I also believe we are going to see better things in the future from him.”

From the beginning of his career as a legislator, Galvano has shown passion and respect for the dignity of the human person. He has shown concern that all individuals are able to obtain health insurance and has supported Florida’s Kidcare program, which would expand health care coverage for uninsured children.

Galvano sponsored a bill to create the office of Child Protection, now known as the Office of Adoption and Child Abuse Prevention.

Elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2002, Galvano is married and the father of three. The family resides in Bradenton and attends both Sts. Peter and Paul the Apostles and Sacred Heart parishes.
