A call to prayer: calendar for public officials

Dates on the “Prayer Calendar for Public Officials” issued by the Diocese of Venice are reminders to pray for public officials.

VENICE | The people who represent the Diocese of Venice in the state and federal government have their names on a unique calendar.

On a specific day of each month, Catholics will be praying for them to do the right thing.

The “Prayer Calendar for Public Officials” started as a lobbying technique to show government officials that there is a network of people who want the representatives “to protect the vulnerable, from the tiniest little embryo to the end of life and everyone in between,” said Jeanne Berdeaux, director of the diocese’s Respect Life Office.

The diocese asks people to pray for lawmakers, especially members of the Florida Legislature who are in this year’s regular session through May 2. Right-to-life issues and other issues important to Catholics are likely to come up during the session, which started March 3.

Berdeaux uses the calendar when she heads to Tallahassee to participate in Catholic Days at the Capitol. The trip this year took place March 11-12. A diocesan group visits with each representative and shows him or her that Catholics in the diocese will be praying for each on a specific day.

Given a day of prayer on their own are high-ranking officials such as President George W. Bush (the first of the month) and Gov. Charlie Crist (the third of the month). U.S. and Florida Supreme Court justices are prayed for as a group on the 28th of each month. Each U.S. senator and representative from the Diocese of Venice has his or her own day, as do the diocese’s state senators. Florida state representatives generally share a day with another representative.
