Life prayer vigil draws from all ages, hometowns

Bishop Dewane leads faithful in prayer in front of Fort Myers abortion clinic.

About 550 people of all ages began the vigil with a Mass at St. Cecilia Parish before praying the rosary. “It’s just great that so many people, and especially so many young people, came together for life,” Bishop Frank J. Dewane said.

FORT MYERS | The Edison Mall parking lot was crowded Feb. 21, but it wasn’t because of a sale.

The many “Choose Life” license plates were the first clue to the curious. Other clues that gave the reason away were the variety of rosaries and pro-life T-shirts. Those in this crowd wanted to be seen as they gathered at the corner of U.S. 41 and Winkler Avenue for a life prayer vigil.

The group peacefully walked about a mile to continue its witness in front of a local abortion clinic. While assembling on both sides of Broadway Avenue, the crowd spontaneously sang.

Bishop Frank J. Dewane and other organizers then led the faithful and clergy present in praying the rosary.

About 550 people of all ages began the vigil with a Mass at St. Cecilia Parish. The group included representatives of more than a dozen parishes within the Diocese of Venice. About 50 remained at St. Cecilia Parish to offer their devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, giving additional support to those walking for the cause.

When the participants in the vigil returned to the parish, the bishop closed the morning’s vigil with a short Benediction service.

Catholics from many parts of the diocese participated in the vigil, which was organized by the diocesan Respect Life Office and the group Helpers of God’s Precious Infants.

“It’s just great that so many people, and especially so many young people, came together for life,” Bishop Dewane said.
