Dominican Sister Nancy Murray, whose brother is actor Bill Murray, gives a dramatic presentation of the life of St. Catherine of Siena at St. Thomas More Parish in Sarasota on Feb. 15.

St. Catherine of Siena’s life celebrated on stage

Dominican Sister Nancy Murray brings to life the Italian saint and sets the audience ‘ablaze.’

SARASOTA | St. Catherine of Siena traveled through time to appear before a crowd of the devoted in the form of Dominican Sister Nancy Murray at a performance Feb. 15 at St. Thomas Moore Parish in Sarasota.

Sister Murray used a comedic flair to get the audience of more than 400 people to “push the button of imagination” and travel back to the 14th century.

The audience made a whirring sound as Sister Murray set the scene in Siena, Italy, on March 13, 1347, St. Catherine’s birthday. Sister Murray then began a journey through the life and mind of the young, humble and powerful saint. She told of the inner struggles the saint suffered and her unfailing devotion to Jesus Christ. Sister Murray then proclaimed the saint’s most famous quote: “If you are what you should be, you will set the whole world ablaze.”

In the end, the inspirational tale of St. Catherine of Siena impressed the audience.

“God used her to correct the course of the church, this young girl,” one audience member said.

Catherine Leibold, 11, said she knew something of St. Catherine. “I learned about her in my religion class,” said Catherine, a student at St. Martha School in Sarasota. “I know she received the stigmata.”

Before the show, Catherine was unsure if she was named after St. Catherine of Siena. Afterwards, she and her grandmother met Sister Murray and received an autograph.

“Who better to have as a patron saint?” Sister Murray asked the young girl.

“Yes, you’re right,” Catherine replied.
