The Leaven Conference is a yearly event featuring seminars on various peace and social justice topics, including health care, water conservation, the war in Iraq and the plight of farmworkers. Bishop Frank J. Dewane will be present at the conference and will celebrate Mass. The keynote speaker will be Sister Helen Prejean, Sisters of St. Joseph, author of “Dead Man Walking” and “The Death of Innocents: An Eyewitness Account of Wrongful Executions.” “Participants will be drawn from all parts of the 10-county Diocese of Venice, given the presence of Sister Helen Prejean,” said Neil Michaud, director of the diocesan peace and justice office. “She will hold sessions to sign ‘The Death of Innocents’ and her first book, ‘Dead Man Walking,’ which was made into a movie.” Attendees will also have an opportunity to sign petitions for the Moratorium Campaign, which Sister Prejean founded in an effort to abolish the death penalty. Now that the state of New Jersey has eliminated executions, efforts will be made for Florida to follow suit, Michaud said. Sister Prejean will also speak of Survive, an organization she created to counsel and support families whose loved ones had been murdered.
