Former Radio City Music Hall Rockette, exercise and dance instructor, and Blessed Trinity parishioner Thelma Neely, 86, takes children through a one-day dance class June 8 at Blessed Trinity Parish in St. Petersburg. The parish event was designed to bring people of different generations together in fun, as well as introduce its upcoming vacation Bible school. St. Patrick teacher wins awardPosted: 06.20.08 Julie Blum, 28, a second-grade teacher at Saint Patrick Catholic School in Largo, was named “Teacher of the Year” by the Largo Chamber of Commerce. The school’s principal, Sister Veronica Visceglia of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, said Blum was first selected for the honor by the faculty of the school. “She has amazing creativity,” the principal said. “She has remarkable skills. She just has this way of touching the imagination and the hearts of second-graders.” Blum found out she was a winner in May. She was given a certificate announcing the honor and took home gifts from area merchants, including a gift certificate for free flowers for a year. Blum is a parishioner of St. Patrick and has taught second grade for all of her 10 years at the school. “I love teaching and I put my heart into it every day,” she said. A guardian ad litem visits the child every month, becomes familiar with his or her case and makes recommendations to the court to help ensure the child has a safe, caring and stable environment. Charitable response is sweetPosted: 06.20.08 The Knights of Columbus members from four south Pinellas parishes raised nearly $3,000 for programs that serve the handicapped. Knights visited four parishes this spring to seek donations and hand out Tootsie Rolls after Sunday Masses at St. Joseph and Blessed Trinity parishes in St. Petersburg, St. John Vianney Parish in St. Pete Beach and Most Holy Name of Jesus Parish in Gulfport. “We had to cover 16 Masses at four different churches,” said program chairman Hank Marois. “We did it by working at one church each weekend.” This year, $1,163 went to the Morning Star School, a diocesan school for children with special needs; $1,163 was given to Pinellas Association for Retarded Children, a community-based organization that assists men, women and children with special needs; and $581 was given to the Louise Graham Regeneration Center, a workshop and training center for adults with special needs. Marois said donations this year almost doubled those received in 2007. Between the sweets and the Knights’ reputation, the Tootsie Rolls are a pretty easy sell, he said. “The entire drive is an easy project; parishioners all know of the Knights of Columbus and of the good works we accomplish, so there is no need to convince churchgoers of our goals,” he said. “They are all very kind and considerate.” Former Tampa resident becomes permanent deaconPosted: 06.20.08 Former Tampa resident John P.
