Hospital receives award

St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Tampa is one of eight children’s hospitals nationwide selected to receive the 2008 National Association of Children’s Hospitals Legislative Advocacy Leadership Award. The award recognizes consistent participation and contributions to the association’s 2007 federal legislative advocacy program.

“We are honored to be recognized for our continuous engagement in federal legislative advocacy,” said St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital administrator Michael Aubin. “Taking a leadership role in federal legislation ensures we represent the voice of our patients and families on national issues that affect children’s health.”

Hospitals receiving the award participated in at least three activations of the association’s grassroots Legislative Action Center and attended three Federal Advocacy Days in Washington, D.C.

Students support troops through play, partnership

St. John Vianney Catholic School partnered with the city of St. Pete Beach and Gulf Beaches Elementary School to provide care packages to troops serving overseas. The students of St. John Vianney collected personal-care items for those serving in the military. The number of items was increased through special drives at the Catholic school, such as students earning a uniform-free day in exchange for a donation. The school also requested a donation as the admission fee for the annual school play.

“It is very fulfilling to see so many members of our community come together to support our military,” said Principal Kristy Swol. “Our troops put their lives on the line every day for our freedom. Participating in the ‘Support our Troops’ drive is a small way we can show we care.”

Poverty-fighting teens can win honors

Faith-filled Catholic young adults engaged in fighting poverty can be nominated for the 2008 Cardinal Bernardin New Leadership Award, a program of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Catholic Campaign for Human Development.

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development puts Gospel and Catholic social teachings into action by supporting self-help, low-income, community-based projects, and through transformative education. In 2007 the organization invested more than $9 million in 340 community-based projects across the country. The leadership award recognizes adults ages 18 to 30 who actively fight poverty.

Past winners include a young man honored for his work to help affluent and low-income youths cross borders and interact with one another through a retreat program in Louisville, Ky.; and a Denver woman honored for her work in community organizing and immigration reform.

The award recipient will receive a $1,000 cash award and be honored at a reception held in conjunction with the November annual meeting of the U.S. Catholic bishops in Baltimore. Nominations are due by July 31. Forms can be downloaded at www.usccb.org/cchd/bernardin.shtml, or requested by e-mailing jrauh@usccb.org or calling 202-541-3297.

Now offered in more than 80 countries and through 11 different faith expressions, WWME has become the largest pro-marriage movement in the world. Organizers say the weekend program is not a retreat, marriage clinic, or a substitute for counseling, but an approach that allows time for spouses to be alone together, to rediscover each other and to together focus on their relationship.

Women wanted for day of building

Laying bricks, pounding nails and raising walls to build a house has long not been the exclusive territory of men; women have been joining the ranks of construction crews for years. Now, East Pasco Habitat for Humanity seeks women volunteers to work just one day, Saturday, May 10, on a Habitat house construction site in Dade City during the last day of National Women Build Week. Construction or home improvement experience is not needed.

Developed through the partnership between Lowe’s and Habitat for Humanity, National Women Build Week celebrates the compassion, dedication, talents and abilities of women from all walks of life. The goal is to both showcase the accomplishments of Habitat’s women volunteers and invite new women volunteers to join the effort to provide decent, safe, affordable housing.

The week leading up to Mother’s Day was selected for its significance to many volunteers, as families with children make up a staggering number of those in need of adequate housing: more than 12 million children – one in six – live in poverty housing in the United States alone.

To volunteer or donate to this project, please call 352-567-1444, e-mail avickers-epascohh@earthlink.net or visit www.ephabitat.org.

Pope John Paul II School PTO honored

The National Catholic Educational Association recently honored Pope John Paul II Catholic School’s Parent-Teacher Organization for fundraising efforts that allowed the Lecanto school to cover its basketball court, create an outdoor learning/play environment and hold down tuition costs.

The PTO was one of eight recipients in the nation this year of the association’s Distinguished Home and School Associations award.

“We are blessed to have such an active, hardworking and successful PTO. Each year they sponsor many activities to support the school and encourage community,” school Principal Lou Whitaker wrote in an April 23 statement announcing the award, received in late March.

The award was based on three major projects:

• In fall 2007, PTO parents raised more than $25,000 for the school’s concrete basketball court, making it more aesthetically pleasing and safer for students.

• During the 2006-2007 school year, the school began designing a new outdoor learning environment for younger children. The parents raised the necessary funds and provided manual labor to build the state-of-the art playground for early-childhood to second-grade students, which helped secure a matching grant of $25,000 from the Couch Foundation.

• The PTO raised $55,000 toward the school’s operating budgeting for the 2006-2007 school year, and has pledged $60,000 for the current school year.

“With skyrocketing insurance health costs, PJPII was having difficulty making ends meet last year. PTO raised an additional $28,000 to help us with our health insurance fees,” Whitaker wrote. “Last year our bill came to $186,325 for health insurance alone. With the help of the PTO, we didn’t need to take out a loan. We started the year off free from debt.”

The award was presented to Principal Lou Whitaker, and the school’s pastor Father Mike Smith, at a special banquet during the National Catholic Educational Association convention in Indianapolis.
