Guardian ad litem program needs help

Nearly 4,000 children within the five counties of the Diocese of St. Petersburg need a caring person to stand up and be their voice in the courtroom and to advocate for them in the child welfare system. As a child’s advocate, a guardian ad litem visits the child every month, becomes familiar with the child’s case and makes recommendations to the court to help ensure the child has a safe, caring and stable environment. Volunteers must be 19 or older, have common sense, good judgment and a heart with the room to help a child.

Volunteers must complete a 30-hour training, part of which can be done online. The average time needed is four to six hours a month. Guardians receive ongoing assistance. To arrange to attend a one-hour orientation, call 1-866-341-1425.

Diocesan Catholics asked to observe Day of Atonement

Parishes, priests, religious brothers and sisters and all the faithful of the St. Petersburg Diocese are asked to join Tuesday, March 11, in a worldwide day of prayer for the reparation and purification of the priesthood following the sins of clergy sexual abuse, and to offer prayers for the victim-survivors of clergy abuse.

At the diocesan level, quiet prayer during exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will take place 1-2 p.m. in the chapel of the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle, 5815 Fifth Ave. N. in St. Petersburg. Community prayer will follow. The diocese asks that parishes invite their congregations to participate in the Day of Atonement and that the prayers of the faithful on that day recall the suffering of victim-survivors and efforts toward helping them find healing. The diocesan Victim Assistance Ministry and Voice of the Faithful are collaborating to offer this Lenten prayer.

Emily was diagnosed with cancer at age 12 and is awaiting her second transplant at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis. Registrants must be between the ages of 18 and 60, in good health and weigh more than 100 pounds. For information, call Mary Ann Renfrow, 727-421-3436.
