A special goodbye to the Florida Catholic

SEPTEMBER 24, 2008 | This marks the final time that my thoughts and words will appear in the Diocese of St. Petersburg edition of the Florida Catholic. When I first arrived, 13 years younger and much more energetic, I loved writing this weekly column and also the five-minute-each-day program with Mary Jo Murphy on Spirit FM 90.5. Time, the aging process and other priorities have seen my commitment to this mode of communication slip away. I shall always be grateful, however, when as a young bishop, these pages and the radio station gave me access to your homes and hearts.

But today we say goodbye not just to this column, but also to the St. Petersburg edition of the Florida Catholic. This will be the last issue, coinciding with the end of the subscription year. For 40 years, the Florida Catholic has been an important instrument of communication to Catholics in the original Diocese of St. Petersburg spanning the counties between Citrus and Lee and, since 1984, the five counties which now comprise our local church. This paper has been somewhat unique in the history of Catholic journalism in the United States, since from its inception it was a joint project of more than one diocese and until today served every diocese in Florida except St. Augustine.

24 DE SEPTIEMBRE, 2008 | Esta es la última vez que mis pensamientos y palabras aparecerán en la edición del Florida Catholic. Cuando llegué a ésta diócesis tenía trece años menos, era más joven y con mucha más energía; me encantaba escribir esta columna semanal y también grabar los breves programas de radio en Spirit FM con Mary Jo Murphy. El tiempo, el proceso de envejecimiento, y otras prioridades han hecho que mi dedicación a este medio de comunicación se perdiera un poco. Pero estaré siempre agradecido por el acceso que estas páginas me dieron, a sus corazones y hogares durante mis primeros años de obispado.

Hoy le decimos adiós no solamente a esta columna, pero también a la edición del Florida Catholic de St Petersburg. Este será el último ejemplar coincidiendo con el final de la subscripción anual. Por cuarenta años el Florida Catholic ha sido un instrumento de comunicación para los católicos en la Diócesis de St. Petersburg, siendo un lazo entre los condados de Citrus y Lee originalmente y desde 1984 entre los cinco condados que ahora son parte de esta Iglesia local. Este periódico ha sido casi único en la historia de la prensa católica en los Estados Unidos desde su creación, fue un proyecto compartido por más de una diócesis y hasta este día sirve las diócesis de la Florida con excepción de la Diócesis de San Agustín.

29 DE AGOSTO, 2008 | En los últimos cuatro milenios y medio de nuestra existencia en el planeta tierra ha sido casi instinto natural de la humanidad el construir lugares para adorar al Todopoderoso. Lugares donde los fieles pueden reunirse para ofrecer sacrificio, oraciones, ofrendas, y alabanza. Lugares que alcanzan al cielo casi como si fuera un embudo que conectara a la tierra con el cielo y el cielo con la tierra. Lugares que expresan la fe del pueblo en el Todopoderoso. Lugares donde las palabras del Todopoderoso pueden ser recordadas y confiadas una vez más a la agenda humana.

A place where the word of the Almighty can be recalled

AUGUST 29, 2008 | For at least four and a half millennia of our existence on planet Earth, it has been an almost natural instinct of humankind to build places of worship to the Almighty. Places where the faithful can gather to offer sacrifice, prayers, gifts, praise. Places which reach to the heavens almost as if to provide a funnel from earth to heaven and heaven to earth. Places which express the faith of the people in the Almighty. Places where the words of the Almighty can be recalled and committed again to the human agenda.

¡Felicitaciones a FAST y a HOPE!

14 DE ABRIL, 2008 | Anoche, (Abril 7) por tercera vez tuve la oportunidad de asistir a una concurrida reunión de la organización de FAST o “Faith in Action Standing Together.” (Según sus siglas en ingles). Una reunión similar se llevo a cabo al mismo tiempo en el condado de Hillsborough con la organización HOPE a la que también me hubiera gustado asistir si me hubiera sido posible.

APRIL 11, 2008 | Last night (April 7th) I had the opportunity for the third time to attend a large meeting of an organization called FAST or “Faith in Action Standing Together.” A similar meeting was held at the same time in Hillsborough County for a like organization called HOPE. Had I been able, I would have liked to have gone there as well.

Both of these organizations are actively involved in improving the quality of life in the two counties for the poor, the vulnerable elderly, children, and the at-risk segment of the population through interaction with government and political leadership. They annually choose achievable goals and set about the task of seeking the support and assistance of the appropriate educational and political leadership.

DECEMBER 21, 2007 | During the Christmas season, we recall the Virgin Mary’s humble “yes” to bring to the world, Christ Jesus. With this yes, our God came to dwell among us and was laid in a lowly manger. Emmanuel, “God with us,” transformed our world by perfectly revealing the depth of God’s love.

21 DE DECIEMBRE, 2007 | Durante esta Navidad, recordamos el humilde “si” de La Virgen María, con el cual aceptó traer al mundo a Cristo Jesús. Con este “si,” nuestro Señor nació en un humilde pesebre y habitó entre nosotros, Emmanuel, “Dios con nosotros,” transformó al mundo, revelando perfectamente la grandeza del amor de Dios.
