Singles connect through clubSeekingSCA (single Catholic adults) for friendships and possible romance. Must be fun-loving, have diverse interests and enjoy socializing. Seeking commitment, but casual relationships and friendships also are desired. Need men and women who can find fun in fasting and abstinence. ST. PETERSBURG | Becky Brooks wants everyone to know: Pinellas Catholic Singles is looking for new people. Club members have gotten together for American Stage in the Park shows, dinner-and-movie nights, and an art event. They’ve volunteered for community and church fundraisers. But there’s always room for more. Church groups can groove themselves an uncomfortable rut by allowing long-term members to run the show while new people are left on the outside – sometimes for years. Brooks said she believes new people bring energy and fresh ideas, and she and other members are eager to hear them. The club, which uses Holy Family Parish in north St. Petersburg as its base, wants people from all parishes to join, as well as people of other faiths. And because single people tend to have busy lives, Catholic Singles doesn’t hold meetings where kudos and complaints top the time agenda. Actually, they don’t really hold meetings at all. Someone will get an idea for a gathering and send an e-mail or post to let everyone else know the details. If people can make it, great. If not, they can check out other things. Brooks would really like to see more people in the club who can plan interesting events – people who can really pull stuff together. Lissette Vega said one example of an event was a recent get-together at the “Liquid Metal Exhibit” at the Gulf Coast Museum of Art. “There were so many people. We were all able to enjoy the featured exhibit, while sampling the hors d’oeuvres, listening to the live band and creating our own piece of ‘metal art.’ Lots of fun.” The whole idea is to bring opportunities for nice people to get together for nice gatherings. Single people have avenues for meeting others, but those that encourage also being involved in church are hard to find, according to Brooks and Vega. n Sound like a match made in heaven?
