Father John J. McCaig, an Archdiocese of Chicago priest who assisted locally at St. Cecelia Parish and served at Morton Plant Hospital, both in Clearwater, died March 21 from injuries suffered in a March 13 automobile accident near Waupaca, Wis. He was 76.

Father McCaig was born Jan. 4, 1932, in Chicago and attended Catholic schools there.

He studied for the priesthood at Quigley Preparatory Seminary, graduating in 1951, and at the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary, graduating in 1958.

He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Chicago April 12, 1958, and served at several parishes in the Chicago area: Our Lady of Victory (1958-1963), Epiphany (1963-1966), St. Michael (1966-1974), St. Mary of the Assumption (1974-1979 and 1980-1989), Our Lady of Knock (1979-1980), St. Catherine of Alexandria (1990) and St. Patrick (1990-1996). He retired in June 1996.

In Florida, Father McCaig remained active in priestly service, assisting at St. Cecelia Parish and serving the patients of Morton Plant Hospital and their families.

The St. Petersburg Diocese planned to honor Father McCaig on his golden jubilee at the chrism Mass this year, but he was unable to make the celebration because he was traveling to offer care to his brother in Wisconsin.

Father McCaig’s survivors include his brother and several cousins.

Funeral services were held April 3 at St. Patrick Parish, Lemont, Ill. Although not yet scheduled, a memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Cecelia Parish, 820 Jasmine Way. For more information, call 727-447-3494.
