Nevins, Diocese of Venice; Father Thomas J. Goggin, pastor of St. Ann Church; and Father Don Walk, associate pastor.

Sister Gerry used the occasion to discuss the changes taking place in U.S. Catholic schools and the role of religious.

“The parish school is the hub and pulse of the parish,” Sister Gerry said. “From it come the leaders of tomorrow. It is not part of a so–called ‘system,’ rather most parish schools are established at the invitation of the bishop of the diocese. Thus there is more flexibility than in the public school system. This is a big advantage, as each school has freedom to select books and courses to meet its own particular needs.”

OCALA | Corpus Christi Bishop Rene H. Gracida, the first bishop of Pensacola–Tallahassee, gives out Communion during the annual Diocesan Respect Life Pilgrimage at Queen of Peace Parish in Ocala. This was the first the pilgrimage was held at a parish church. “In previous years we’ve held it at Mary, Queen of the Universe Shrine here in Orlando or the shrine in St. Augustine,” said Deborah Stafford Shearer, director of the Respect Life Office, which sponsored the Mass. “We’re hoping to rotate the pilgrimage from year to year to a parish in each of our deaneries. It helps connect us together.”

During his homily, the Bishop Gracida touched on many of the issues encompassed within the Consistent Ethic of Life philosophy, developed by the late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin. It has become a guide for Catholics in addressing respect–life issues.

Bishop Gracida praised Florida’s Catholic bishops and laity for their efforts on behalf of the unborn. “It’s especially good to be back while you and I ... glory in that wonderful victory which was won on March 11 in the Legislature in Tallahassee when the Legislature voted to override the governor’s veto of the Partial–Birth Abortion Ban Act,” he said.

DELTONA | St. Clare Pastor Father Tim Kandel holds up a plaque on the Feast of St. Clare that reads “His Holiness John Paul II cordially imparts his apostolic blessing to the St. Clare Catholic Community.”

Out of necessity, St. Clare was officially formed on Nov. 1, 1989, and its first Mass was celebrated Feb. 4, 1990, on the grounds that will soon house its first church building. Our Lady of the Lakes Parish in Deltona “was bursting at the seams,” said Father Kandel. Other St. Clare families came from All Souls Parish in Sanford and St. Peter Parish in DeLand.

The first place of worship was a storefront on El Cam Boulevard in Deltona. Constant problems with the parking and the owner forced the move to the Osteen Civic Center.

Father Kandel said Christ is the weaver who has taken 425 families from different parishes, cultures and regions of the country and has woven them together.
