ORLANDO | Mark Lyons, Florida’s united Farm Workers Union director, addresses a rally of United Farm Workers Union members July 2 prior to issuing a “declaration of independence“ from the “discrimination and paternalism” of the Coca Cola Company. The dispute between Coca Cola and the United Farm Workers of America appeared to be headed toward a new contract after the workers participated in a fast protesting the company’s Minute Maid division with failure to negotiate in good faith a new contract with the union.

In a creative approach to responding to the needs of parish families, the weekly friendship hour held on Sunday mornings after the family Mass, takes on a monthly theme. Adopting the theme “All saints are homemade,” parishioners enjoy the “sacred” found in the “ordinary” events of the family.

Artisians restore near century-old Stations

He is helped by an assistant. The parish, the southern–most parish in the continental United States and one of it oldest as it became a parish in 1846, is being remodeled with grant money from the state of Florida and private donations.

Storms bring flooding, heartbreak and help

BONITA SPRINGS | Andres Pascual, 2, sits in his family’s mobile home at Manna Christian Camp in Bonita Springs. The house suffered major water damage from several successive September storms. Most of the contents of the home that were saved from water damage were pushed in a dry corner of the house. Andres’ family was helped by the Christian Brothers who, out of St. Leo Parish in Bonita Springs, serve the less fortunate in the area.

First phase of National Shrine of Mary completed

ORLANDO | Artist Jerzy Kenar helps guide a statue of Mary into place for a statuary exhibit at Mary, Queen of the Universe Shrine in Orlando. The unveiling of the statue, which Kenar sculpted, was part of a celebration of the completion of the first phase of the shrine’s construction.
Editor’s Note: Pope Benedict XVI elevated the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe in Orlando to the status of minor basilica and on Aug. 22, the feast of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 2,000 people overwhelmed with the significance of the occasion gathered to at the basilica to celebrate.
