JASON COLLINS | FC ACT OF PENITENCEPriest: Invites people to reflect briefly on their sinfulness, leads the people in praising God’s mercy and conveys God’s forgiveness for sins to prepare people to receive the Eucharist. People: Pray the act of penitence and praise the Lord for his mercy, often by singing. Did you know? From time to time, especially during the Easter season, the act of penitence may be replaced with a blessing with holy water. Tip: Don’t misinterpret absolution at Mass as a substitute for the sacrament of reconciliation. It does not apply to people in a state of mortal sin. GLORIA AND OPENING PRAYERPriest: Invites people to sing an ancient hymn of praise, at the end of which he offers an opening prayer with his hands outstretched. People: Sing the hymn, say, “Amen” to the prayer. Did you know? The Gloria reminds us of the hymn of the angels at Bethlehem. Tip: After you say, “Amen,” it’s time to sit down.
