![]() Abortion amendment failsPosted: 05.02.08 According to the Florida Catholic Conference, an action alert generated by the FCC Advocacy Network urged senators to vote “yes” on proposed legislation that requires a first trimester ultrasound be reviewed with and explained to a woman seeking an abortion, unless she signs a form declining that right. The bill, SB 2400, was sponsored by State Sen. Daniel Webster. After debate April 30 in the Senate, the bill failed on a tie vote (20-20). Proponents of the legislation indicated that the bill would ensure a pregnant woman receives all information available in order to make an informed decision prior to an abortion, that the woman does not have to view the ultrasound if she chooses, and ultrasounds are already required by most abortion clinics to determine the gestational age of the child. Concerns cited by senators opposing the bill included a decline in the right to privacy, an infringement on the doctor-patient relationship, and an undue burden and impediment to a woman’s right to have an abortion. Supporters countered that a woman’s right to abortion remains fully intact in Florida law, and this legislation would allow her to make a more informed decision involving life and death. Another FCC Advocacy Network action alert prompted nearly 3,100 messages urging legislators to maintain $2 million in the state budget to fund crisis pregnancy centers throughout Florida. In late April, Florida House and Senate leaders agreed on a $66 billion budget for next fiscal year. Included in the reconciled budget is $2 million for crisis pregnancy centers that provide vital services for women and children. In this difficult budget year, funding for crisis pregnancy centers was in jeopardy of being cut drastically or eliminated. The House maintained the $2 million that appeared in the budget since 2006, but there was no appropriation in the Senate’s initial version of the budget. House and Senate leaders met the weekend of April 26-27 to finalize the budget and agreed to maintain this important line item. The budget will now go before the full House and the Senate for a vote by the end of the day today (May 2) – the closing of the 2008 legislative session.
