A goodbye to ‘old glory’

Knights of Columbus from Father Howard J. Lesch Assembly 1564 in Fort Walton Beach and Boy Scouts from Troop 506 at St. Mary’s and Troop 508 at Eglin Air Force Base conduct a flag retirement ceremony at Holy Name of Jesus Parish in Niceville May 3.

When the U.S. flag becomes worn, torn, faded or badly soiled, it is replaced with a new flag, and the old flag is retired with dignity and respect. The traditional method of retirement is to incinerate the flag with reverence.

Knights of Columbus councils recognized

Knights of Columbus councils 4444 and 13527 from the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee each received recognition as “State Council of the Year” at the Knights of Columbus Florida state convention May 23-25 in Orlando.

Tim Stapleton, past grand Knight of Council 13527, said that his council, which numbers approximately 140 members, won the award for Division II which includes councils with between 75 and 175 members.

“With 1,300 councils in the state, we’re extremely pleased to have been recognized in this way by our brother Knights,” Stapleton said. “We worked hard, with the leadership of Grand Knight Jack Starr, and participated in 63 different activities and events during the past fraternal year.”

Fletcher Cannon, grand Knight of Council 4444, attributed his council’s award to having taken a long look at the “Service Program” from the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus. “We decided not to necessarily do things the way we had always done them. We had terrific support from our members; they pulled together in all areas to accomplish the work of the council this year. We just celebrated our 50th anniversary as a council and that celebration gave us new energy and pride.”

Council 4444 won the award in Division III, for councils with more than 175 members.

Deacon Fraites celebrates 25th anniversary

Deacon Tom Fraites celebrated his 25th anniversary of ordination May 21. He has served at Holy Name of Jesus Parish in Niceville his entire ministry.

In addition to serving at liturgies, Deacon Fraites serves on the deacon formation team for the diocese, in prison ministry, youth ministry and Cursillo. He also visits shut-ins and the terminally ill, and teaches in the parish’s faith formation programs.

Bishop John H. Ricard, SSJ, commended Deacon Fraites’ dedicated service to the people of the diocese, saying, “You have touched many lives, providing compassion, education, direction and spiritual guidance. For these many years of service, you can be justifiably proud.”
