TAMPA | Deacon Tim Warner, diocesan respect life director, told the statewide Respect Life Conference attendees Oct. 13 that the diocese’s respect life award was “all about hope.”

“Everyone who comes into contact with the recipient is filled with hope for our church’s future: hope that the Gospel of life is being proclaimed to the people who most need to hear it, hope that there are young men and women who live their faith,” said Deacon Warner. “It is no surprise that this recipient is guided by the Brotherhood of Hope. This recipient is a light burning brightly in the darkness of the culture of death, a light which fills all with hope.

Led by the brothers, the Catholic Student Union at Florida State University received the award at the annual meeting. Banquet-goers saw a video of the January 2007 FSU-CSU trip to Washington, D.C., where more than 55 students participated in the March for Life.

In addition, Deacon Warner recognized the student group for its ongoing efforts to promote the respect life message on campus and its joyful witness.

“(The students) called me on my cell phone from their bus as they were driving back from Washington. I was traveling (from Panama City) to Little Flower Church (in Pensacola) for the annual respect life Mass. They wanted to tell me ‘how cool’ the experience was and to ask me to tell everyone at Little Flower Church that the students were praying for them and their efforts to foster a greater respect for life,” he said.

For nine years, the Brotherhood of Hope has encouraged students to speak out with conviction and charity regarding the need to respect life, Deacon Warner said.

When the award was announced, the 18 CSU members — proud of their association with the FSU Seminoles — began to do the “FSU chop” and the entire audience went wild, according to Deacon Warner. n
