Diocese to begin publishing magazineWith this last issue of the Pensacola-Tallahassee edition of the Florida Catholic, the diocese says goodbye to a longtime friend and hello to a new one – our new diocesan magazine, The Catholic Compass. Posted: 10.23.09 When will the first issue of The Catholic Compass arrive in homes/parishes? The inaugural issue will arrive in homes on or about the First Sunday of Advent, Nov. 29, 2009. How often will The Catholic Compass be published? The Catholic Compass will be published 10 times a year – monthly except for combined January/February and July/August issues. What does the magazine look like? The Catholic Compass is a 24-page magazine in full color. The news and features inside will include our local stories of faith and good works to inspire and educate, columns with practical information about living our faith in today’s world, and news from around the world and features about our Church’s traditions. Will we be able to put our parish news into The Catholic Compass? Yes! Your parish news will be an important part of The Catholic Compass. The main change will be that your news will have to be submitted earlier to meet the publishing deadlines. For example, advance news of coming events for the January/February issue should be submitted by Oct. 26. Look for posters around your parish, send information via e-mail to thecatholiccompass@ptdiocese.org, or log onto the Web site and click on The Catholic Compass link to submit event information. News stories from your parish will be covered in one of two ways. For major events (please make sure to let us know about them!), a reporter may cover the event and submit an article to the magazine, just as in the past. We’re also working to greatly enhance the services we provide online, including setting up a parish’s bulletin board. Parishes will be able to submit their news and photos directly to the site to share them with others. Some stories will also be featured on the diocesan Web site. Look for these changes to begin during the month of November. What happens to the Florida Catholic? The diocese will no longer publish a Pensacola-Tallahassee edition of the Florida Catholic. This issue is the final one. For the month of November, watch the diocesan Web site for news. Then, beginning with the December issue, The Catholic Compass will be the official print publication of the diocese. The Florida Catholic will still publish diocesan newspapers for the dioceses of Orlando, Venice and Palm Beach. This change from the newspaper to the magazine comes at the end of the subscription year, to make the paperwork easier for everyone. If you choose to renew a subscription to the Florida Catholic, it can’t be for a Pensacola-Tallahassee edition. I’ve got a subscription envelope for the Florida Catholic in my offering envelopes. What should I do with it? Please use it as you normally would, by putting in your contribution for your subscription and placing it into the offertory basket at your parish. Your parish will then use your paid subscription to help defray the parish expense of the magazine, just as it did in the past with the newspaper. The price of a subscription for The Catholic Compass for the first year is $18.
