Sister Margaret Ann Walsh, 93

EMMITSBURG, MD | Daughters of Charity Sister Margaret Ann Walsh died here May 2 at Villa St. Michael, the province’s retirement residence. She was 93 years of age and in the 66th year of her vocation, which included ministry at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola in the 1940s and again in the late ’80s and early ’90s.

Sister Walsh was born in Baltimore, one of eight children of John and Delia Joyce Walsh. She entered the community of the Daughters of Charity in 1936. She attended St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg, received her bachelor’s degree in nursing education in 1951 and her master’s degree in administration, nursing education in 1956 from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

In 1943, Sister Walsh began her nurses’ training which culminated in a career that lasted 42 years with assignments as director of schools of nursing, instructor in nursing, coordinator of nursing, and hospital education director in Daughters of Charity institutions in Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Florida and Virginia.

From 1947 to 1949, Sister Walsh served as head nurse of Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. She returned to Sacred Heart in 1985 and worked in the pastoral care department there until 1992. She then returned to St. Joseph’s provincial house in Emmitsburg and served as pharmacy manager until her retirement to the villa in 1997. She was a member of the American Nurses Association and its Council of Continuing Education.

A Mass of Christian burial was offered for Sister Walsh May 6 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg. She is survived by a sister, Daughters of Charity Sister Julia Walsh, Emmitsburg; and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
