OBITUARY

Father Edward Richardson, 89

SANTA ROSA BEACH | Father Edward Richardson, who often visited with his sister Dolores Logue and her husband, Tony, at St. Rita Parish, died April 26. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated May 6 at Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek, Virginia Beach, Va.

Father Richardson was ordained Feb. 9, 1950, at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. A member of the Society for African Missions, Father Richardson served as an auxiliary chaplain and contract chaplain for the Archdiocese for Military Services at the time of his death.

Born Feb. 6, 1919, in Philadelphia, Father Richardson enrolled in Navy Chaplains’ School after the outbreak of the Korean conflict. For 30 years, he served in the U.S. Navy, with deployments in Japan and Vietnam and aboard the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the Combat Action Ribbon, Meritorious Service Medal and the Navy Commendation Medal and was a lifetime member of the Marine Corps League. While completing a master’s degree in philosophy at Notre Dame University in 1965, Father Richardson served as chaplain to the school’s Navy, Army and Air Force ROTC units. He was the first recipient of the “God, Country and Notre Dame” award presented by the Notre Dame alumni association.

Father Richardson also served as state chaplain for the Virginia state council of the Knights of Columbus from 1985 to 2008 and state chaplain for the Virginia State Court of the Catholic Daughters of America. In 1990, he received the National Brotherhood Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews.

In addition to his sister, survivors include a nephew and niece, and grandnephew and grandnieces. Father Richardson will be buried Aug. 12 at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.
