PENSACOLA | Courtney Jenista has been kicking a soccer ball since she was 4. Now, as a senior at Pensacola Catholic High School, her athletic skills have led her to be named Pensacola News Journal’s winter all-area girls soccer player of the year.

“It’s good,” said Courtney of her honor. “After all of that hard work, it’s nice to finally get recognized.”

This past season, she scored 32 goals for the Catholic High School Crusaders and assisted with four. Playing as forward and midfielder, she helped her team make school soccer history by reaching the regional finals.

“My most memorable game was the regional semifinals. We were tied 1-1 and I scored the winning goal. We’d never been to the regional finals before,” Courtney said.

But even though she stays focused on soccer, she doesn’t lose sight of the presence of God in the game.

“We always pray for safety, good weather and to help us win,” she said. “God is always there with me every game I play. I ask him to help me just do my best.”

After Courtney graduates in May, she will attend Stetson University in DeLand, where she will fulfill a soccer scholarship and begin her pre-med studies with the goal of becoming an orthopedic surgeon.
