George W. Cayer, 77

Father John Cayer’s father dies unexpectedly in Fort Walton Beach.

George W. Cayer, 77, father of Father John Cayer, died unexpectedly March 7 in Fort Walton Beach. Born March 31, 1931, in Bristol, Conn., he was the seventh child of nine. In 1954, he married Rosalind Shakinski in Torrington, Conn. He moved his family to Maine in 1966, then to Florida in 1974.

Cayer served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a general contractor for more than 20 years. Being an avid boatman, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary where he served for 15 years. He worked as maintenance supervisor at St. Mary Parish in Fort Walton Beach before retiring in 1997 due to declining health.

Survivors in addition to Father Cayer, pastor of Our Lady of Victory Parish in Crestview, include his wife, Rosalind, and eight other children: Alan Cayer of Pass Christian, Miss.; Steven (Linda) Cayer of Oakland, Maine; William Cayer, Joseph (Stella) Cayer, Mary Jo (U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Andre) Gustave and Judy (Robert) Henry, all of Fort Walton Beach; Roland (Annette) Cayer of Ave Maria; and U.S. Air Force Capt. Todd (Wendy) Cayer of Aurora, Colo. He is also survived by two brothers, Lionel Cayer of Fairfield, Maine, and Maurice Cayer of Southington, Conn.; and five sisters, Rita Lange of Jacksonville, Georgette Anderson and Delores Rosser of Sarasota, Jeannette Diamond of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Frances Million of Robbinsville, N.C. One brother, Bernard, preceded him in death in 1993.

Father Cayer celebrated the Mass of Christian Burial March 12 at St. Mary Parish. Memorial donations may be directed to the St. Mary Building Fund, 110 St. Mary Ave., Fort Walton Beach, FL 32548.
