LINDA REEVES | FC Adrian Dominicans celebrate anniversaryPosted: 06.15.09 To celebrate 125 years of ministry and service throughout the world, nearly 100 Adrian Dominican nuns based throughout Florida gathered at Rosarian Academy in West Palm Beach May 31 for a special reception. Similar events to commemorate the milestone anniversary are being held throughout the country. More than 30 sisters from the order live and work in the Diocese of Palm Beach. The Adrian Dominican Sisters are an international Roman Catholic congregation of more than 850 vowed religious women serving as educators, lawyers, doctors, health care professionals, social workers and more. They minister in 31 states and six countries, providing aid to people in need. Based in Adrian, Mich., the order sponsors two universities, Barry University in Florida and Siena Heights University in Michigan; a nonprofit health care system; two hospitals; one long-term health care facility; two retreat centers; and four congregation-owned schools, including Rosarian Academy. Adrian Dominican Sister Corrine Sanders, principal of Rosarian Academy, has been at the school since 1978. Sacred Heart leaders have set up a link to connect to friends and even see what they look like in photos. Knights help two schoolsPosted: 06.15.09 The Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council 4999 is helping Hope Rural School in Indiantown provide summer programs for children in the western part of the diocese. The group presented $2,500 to the school, which is funded by grants, donations and subsidies. The school has pre-K through fifth-grade classes and its population of more than 120 is mostly of Guatemalan heritage, but students also include Mexican, Puerto Rican, Haitian and other children. The summer programs will offer educational, recreational and social opportunities for the children. The council also presented a check for $5,000 to Drew Houvouras, principal of St. Clare School in North Palm Beach. The donation is being applied to a tuition assistance support program at the school that helps families with Catholic school tuition. St. Clare features grades kindergarten through eighth. Seminary starts new master’s programPosted: 06.05.09 St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary’s Master of Arts in theological studies will begin in August. The program is geared toward individuals seeking a graduate degree in theology for their own personal enrichment and ministerial interests. The program offers a basic foundation in the core disciplines of Catholic theology (sacred Scripture, systematic theology, moral theology, Church history), as well as the opportunity for more specialized study in those areas. It is open to qualified clergy, religious and laity of all denominations. Registration ends July 31. Rosarian Academy opens new facilityPosted: 06.05.09 Rosarian Academy has opened the new Picotte Center for Athletics and Fine Arts. The three-story, 58,480-square-foot center features visual and performing arts studios with the latest technologies, physical education and health classrooms, new locker rooms, a versatile multipurpose room and a full-size gymnasium with a regulation-size basketball and volleyball court. The eight-year project that involved a year and a half of construction was made possible through individual and collective efforts. In May 2001, Rosarian’s board of directors and the Adrian Dominican Sisters board of trustees approved a long-term master campus plan to address key improvements to the campus. A $9.5 million campaign project was launched. Due to the outpouring of support, the campaign funded the construction of a preschool, additions to the Mary Alice Fortin Building, modernization of the Lewis Building, the addition of three new eighth-grade classrooms and the construction of the Picotte Center. Council women hold conventionPosted: 06.05.09 The Palm Beach Diocesan Council of Catholic Women held its annual convention May 15-18 in West Palm Beach. Themed “Catholic Women in a Changing World” more than 110 people attended the gathering that kicked off with a Mass at Holy Name of Jesus Parish. Main celebrant Bishop Gerald M. Barbarito was also keynote speaker at a banquet that followed the celebration. During the convention at the Airport Hilton, new officers were installed. This year’s council president is Jean Waddington of St. Matthew Parish in Lantana, Myrna Wong of Holy Family in Port St. Lucie takes on the role of vice president, recording secretary is Gloria Davidson of St. Ann in West Palm Beach and treasurer is Ann Behar of Our Lady Queen of the Apostles in Royal Palm Beach. Other installed members are Dolores Hughes of St. Jude in Boca Raton, parliamentarian; Veronica Comrie of St Mark, corresponding secretary; and Mary Anderson of St. Rita in Wellington, historian. Recognitions were presented for leadership to Kathleen Mueller, Northern Deanery; Diane Bifano, Central Deanery; and Ann Behar, Southern Deanery. The Women of Council Award went to Betty McKinley, a former council president who has dedicated many years of time and effort to the council and its cause.
