June 2008 Principal earns doctoratePosted: 06.16.08 Serena Brasco, principal of St. Juliana School in West Palm Beach, earned a doctoral degree in education leadership last month from Florida Atlantic University. According to school officials, Brasco is the first principal from the school to earn a doctoral degree. “This is an awesome achievement for Dr. Brasco and a wonderful opportunity for St. Juliana School,” said Father Alfredo Hernández, pastor of St. Juliana Parish. “This addition to her credentials will help ensure we continue to attract the best and brightest staff and focus on the latest and most effective educational approaches for our students. We congratulate Dr. Brasco on her achievement and are eagerly looking forward to ongoing growth and success.” A reception was held for Brasco at the school May 6. Students, faculty, and staff surprised her in the school’s courtyard with congratulatory cards from each class and an array of cakes, cookies, snacks and cold drinks. Spiritual retreat in Spanish plannedPosted: 06.16.08 The diocesan Office of Hispanic Ministry will host a spiritual retreat for Spanish-speakers July 18-20 at Our Lady of Florida Spiritual Life Center in North Palm Beach. Student to take part in leadership workshopPosted: 06.16.08 Hannah Siegrist was recently selected as one of 60 girls from the United States and abroad to participate in the Eleanor Roosevelt Girls’ Leadership workshop this summer in New York. Hannah, a sophomore at John Carroll High School, hopes to learn about becoming a female leader in politics. At John Carroll, Hannah is a member of the track, golf and soccer teams, the Student Government Association and the Multicultural, Art, Drama and French Clubs. “My goal is to go to Duke or Holy Cross University after graduation and become a cardiologist,” she said. “I have a passion for leadership and politics and want to incorporate that into my life as well.” The Roosevelt leadership workshop was created to promote women’s empowerment, focusing on Eleanor Roosevelt as a role model. The workshop is highly successful in developing leadership skills, as well as social consciousness and commitment to citizenship in the participants. The program consists of workshops, interactive seminars, a service project, all-day field trips to New York City and Albany, creative and cultural activities, and time to relax and reflect. “I am looking forward to traveling to New York City and meeting with international women leaders at the United Nations,” Hannah said. While at the workshop, she will also participate in a community service project, learn about the role of women in state government and politics, and become more knowledgeable about women’s history and women’s issues and concerns. Posted: 06.16.08 Sister Marguerite O’Callaghan, formerly known as Sister Francis Patrice O’Callaghan, died May 29 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Mich., at the age of 83. She was in the 53rd year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation. Sister O’Callaghan ministered in Florida 13 years, serving St. Patrick in Miami from 1958 to 1964, the Florida Mission Chapter from 1993 to 1994 and Barry University in Miami from 1996 to 2002. She lived in a private residence in West Palm Beach before becoming a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 2004. Read the complete obituary HERE. John Carroll recognizes outstanding alumnusPosted: 06.16.08 Joey Miller, a 1960 graduate of John Carroll High School, is the recipient of the school’s 2007-2008 alumni award. Miller, owner of St. Lucie Battery & Tire, is a school supporter and has sponsored John Carroll’s Habitat for Humanity home building project, enabling nearly 1,000 students to provide community service and learn new skills. He is also active with with St. Anastasia School and the Humane Society of St. Lucie County. Miller, a former member of John Carroll’s advisory board, won $10,000 in cash during a school fundraiser last February and generously donated the entire amount back to the school. The new Immaculate Conception adoration chapel is now open at St. Vincent Ferrer Parish in Delray Beach. The chapel is located on the north side of the church facility and is designed to accommodate nearly 40 worshippers. The facility is equipped with security cameras and the doors are locked in the evening hours, but can be entered with a security code.
Medical center celebrates 70 yearsPosted: 06.06.08 St. Mary Medical Center, south Florida’s oldest faith-based hospital, celebrates its 70th anniversary this year. More than 220 guests attended a special commemorative Mass and rededication May 12. Bishop Gerald M. Barbarito and Father Aiden Lacy, hospital chaplain, were present. In addition to the rededication, May 12 was officially declared St. Mary’s Day through proclamations from Gov. Charlie Crist, Senators Bill Nelson and Mel Martinez, Palm Beach County Commissioner Karen Marcus and West Palm Beach Mayor Lois Frankel. The medical facility’s first dedication took place in 1938. The hospital has been serving the medical and health care needs of the community for seven decades, offering medical, surgical, obstetrics, pediatrics, orthopedics, trauma and emergency services. Young mathematicians compete in tournamentPosted: 06.06.08 Students from schools from around the diocese participated in the 10th annual Diocese of Palm Beach math tournament. St. Clare School hosted this year’s event on its campus. The schools represented included St. Clare in North Palm Beach; All Saints in Jupiter; Holy Name, St. Juliana and Rosarian Academy in West Palm Beach; St. Joan of Arc in Boca Raton; St. Vincent Ferrer in Delray Beach; St. Joseph in Stuart; and St. Luke in Palm Springs. Winners in the eighth-grade category include David Builes of St. Joan of Arc, Hunter Burnette of Rosarian Academy and Janine Sevilleja of Holy Name of Jesus. Top scorers in the seventh-grade competition include Harrison Bidwell of Rosarian, Becky Meiser and Nick DiEgidio of St. Clare, and J.T. Homrich of St. Joan of Arc. Sixth-grade competition winners include first-place winner Patrick O’Hanlon of Rosarian and high-scorers Sawyer Shaw of Rosarian and Millie Isiminger of St. Clare.
