April 2008 Former Newman star lands coaching jobPosted: 04.25.08 Alonzo Jefferson, former Cardinal Newman High School star whose playing career earned him multiple honors, will try to carry that success into his first job as head coach. Jefferson, an assistant coach for the Cardinal Newman Crusaders the last two years, has been named the new head coach at Palm Beach Lakes High School. Prior to returning to Newman, Jefferson had been an assistant for 12 years at Palm Bay High School and one year at Florida Air Academy. Jefferson was recently named as part of the all-time Palm Beach Post All-Area Team, which honored the greatest high school football players in history. In 1982, he was honored as national offensive player of the year by The Sporting News after leading Newman to a 10-0 regular season record. Jefferson was also honored as an All-America by Parade Magazine. He will finish out the school year at Newman before starting his new job. Pope John Paul II graduate to help in GhanaPosted: 04.18.08 Meghan DeChard, a graduate of Pope John Paul II in Boca Raton, is headed to the Diocese of Sunyani in Ghana in May on a mission trip. DeChard graduated last year from Pope John Paul II and currently attends the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. She will travel with seven sorority sisters and stay for more than three weeks. The students will be coordinating and directing weeklong ministries aimed at women and children and evangelization in three cities in Ghana. The trip is in conjunction with American Serving Other Nations, a nonprofit group encouraging and assisting Christians in ministry and humanitarian work to communities throughout the world. Catholic Charities’ counselor recognized as top social workerPosted: 04.18.08 Diann Jasinski, division director of counseling for Catholic Charities Diocese of Palm Beach, has been selected as “Social Worker of the Year” by the Palm Beach Unit of the National Association of Social Workers. She has been an employee of Catholic Charities for 23 years and held her current administrative position since 2002. Jasinski began working for Catholic Charities as a social worker and therapist. During her career with Catholic Charities, she supervised student interns from various schools of social work and mental health, and she established the Diocese of Palm Beach Critical Incident Stress Management Team, which responds when a traumatic event occurs in a Catholic school or parish. Jasinski created a marital therapy program at Catholic Charities called Intensive Marriage Counseling. As part of the program, a team of therapists provides intensive counseling when a couple is facing separation or divorce. Her roles also include serving as facilitator and facilitator trainer for a child sexual abuse prevention program called Protecting God’s Children. She currently supervises a staff of 10 therapists who work throughout four counties. A graduate of Barry University with a master’s in social work, Jasinski is a licensed clinical social worker with the Florida Department of Professional Regulation. She is married with four children and three stepchildren. Jasinski is an active member of Memorial Presbyterian Church, where she has been a member of the choir for the past 30 years. Free cataract and glaucoma testing offered at parishPosted: 04.18.08 The St. Jude parish nurse program is sponsoring free vision screenings for cataracts and glaucoma through the Aker Kasten Eye Center’s community outreach program this month. Each screening lasts approximately five minutes. Patients should bring their distance glasses to the exam. Vision will be checked and the doctor will examine the eye and perform a pressure check for glaucoma. No dilating drops will be used. Patients will be referred back to their current optometrist and given a copy of the doctor’s findings to take with them. Fundraiser benefits homelessPosted: 04.11.08 Last month, the Samaritan Center for Homeless Families, a program of Catholic Charities, held a fundraiser, Crystal Celebration Dinner, that made a net profit of $78,278.94 according to organizers. Proceeds will go toward transitional housing, food, case management, counseling, budgeting and parenting classes, children’s classes and tutorial support, daily life-skill training, job training and transportation for clients. The next benefit will be the “Hawaiian Luau” Saturday, April 26, at Grand Harbor Beach Club in Vero Beach. Ticket are $100 and reservations can be made by calling 772-770-3039. The Samaritan Center for Homeless Families celebrates 15 years of providing services in Indian River County. Catholic Charities provides programs and services in Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Okeechobee and Indian River counties for more than 25,000 people in need each year. There are 16 programs in 49 sites to provide assistance to people in need, regardless of race, color or creed. Schools receive supportPosted: 04.11.08 Last month, a total of $136,000 was presented to Catholic schools around the Diocese of Palm Beach. According to Chris Grant, diocesan controller, the funds came from parishes as the result of a collection made the first of the year, prompted by Bishop Gerald M. Barbarito. “The $8,000 per school was the summary of the nonparochial collection retrieved in January 2007 for Catholic school support,” said Grant, helping distribute the funds. “This amount was previously published in the financial supplement in the February 2008 issue of the Florida Catholic.” The presentation and check distribution to each school was well received at a March 5 principal’s meeting hosted by Sister Joan Dawson, superintendent of schools. “Each school received a check for $8,000 to be used toward educational pursuits, such as scholarships,” Sister Dawson told the Florida Catholic. Marian Rosary Festival date is setPosted: 04.04.08 The Diocese of Palm Beach’s annual Marian Rosary Festival, held to honor the Blessed Mother, is set for May 4, beginning at 2 p.m. All are invited to participate in prayer with images of Mary. The day includes a procession with participants dressed in colorful clothing from countries around the world displaying their favorite icon of Mary. Bishop Gerald M. John Carroll student receives honorsPosted: 04.04.08 James Lauriello, a junior at John Carroll High School in Fort Pierce, is the winner of the 2008 “Prudential Spirit of Community Award,” which is presented to the top 10 percent of applicants from throughout the state. The award is given for significant hours of volunteer service and community involvement and is presented annually by Prudential in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Based on the number of volunteer hours submitted, James also has received the “President’s Volunteer Service Award,” which recognizes Americans who have volunteered their time to serve their communities and their country. James will receive a certificate and a letter from President George W. Bush. James earned his awards in part by volunteering with the Environmental Studies Center in Jensen Beach where he began a youth-run program aimed at protecting and preserving the environment of the Indian River Lagoon located near the area. James started as a camp counselor his freshman year, discovering his love of marine biology. Since then, he has volunteered to help numerous programs of local agencies and organizations aimed at preserving the environment. This past year, James has worked on projects involving the Florida fighting conch, helping the shelled animal regain population in the Indian River Lagoon. He also helped replant mangroves, complete fish counts, perform reef and sea grass studies, and helped with numerous beach cleanup projects. “I plan to continue my education in marine biology,” he said. “My passion is to help our environment and to make a difference in the community.”
