Theologian offers free classesLAKE WORTH | Sacred Heart Parish here hosts a free series of graduate-level courses taught by a theologian from St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary. Dr. Antonio Lopez has taught Catholic adult formation classes for a little more than 10 years, with topics such as systematic theology, social and ecclesiastical theology, sacred Scripture and neo-scholastic theology. Scholarships for high school girls availableThe Palm Beach diocesan Council of Catholic Women encourages girls in their senior year of high school to apply to its annual college scholarship program. Three Catholic seniors each will receive $1,000 in scholarship money to attend a Catholic college or university in the fall of this year. Students place first in Odyssey of the MindA team of students from Sacred Heart School in Lake Worth took home first-place trophies Feb. 23 during the regional Odyssey of the Mind competition held at Dwyer High School in West Palm Beach. This is the second year in a row Sacred Heart students have won. This year’s winners will go on to compete at the state contest April 6 at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. Their science teacher is Cynthia Cokorogianis. Mrs. C, as the students at Sacred Heart School call her, inspired her Odyssey of the Mind group to think “outside the box” and work together, which earned the team a score of 347 out of 350 at the regional competition. The team included students Kaitlyn Chase, John McNulty, Anthony Rainho, Joseph Sweat and Keren Zaldivar. OBITUARY Msgr. John Daly, 95DELRAY BEACH | Msgr. John Daly, a retired educator and pastor who served as a weekend priest at this city’s Emmanuel Parish from 1988 through 2004, died here March 6. He was 95. Read the complete obituary HERE. OBITUARY Sister Ellen M. Murphy, 84Dominican Sister Ellen M. Murphy, formerly known as Rita Anne Murphy, died March 1 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Mich. She was 84 and ministered in religious life for 66 years. Read the complete obituary HERE. Retreat center displays art from ItalyThe Tryptych Crucifix, which once stood in front of Our Lady of Florida Spiritual Center in North Palm Beach, was destroyed during a hurricane in 2004. Now, a new cross and corpus is placed at the entrance of the center, located at 1300 U.S. Highway 1. The display was made possible through a donation from Elayne Fischer in dedication to her parents and family. Passionist Father Paul Wierichs, center director, commissioned Baker Liturgical Art and Italian designer Angelo Gherardi to create and install the 9-foot art piece weighing nearly 2,000 pounds. The white Carrara marble corpus is hand carved and mounted to a 22-foot steel cross. The cross is supported by a base of black African granite, featuring the Passionists’ symbol in marble mosaic and the words “We preach Christ crucified” cut into the granite and gold leaf. In 2006, Baker Liturgical Art completed the restoration of the Cathedral of St. Ignatius Loyola in Palm Beach Gardens for Bishop Gerald M. Barbarito. Horses will raise funds for Honduras mission tripSt. Thomas More Parish in Boynton Beach is turning to horses to raise money for a good cause. Horse fans are invited to the Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club in Wellington March 2 for the Wellington Masters, a competition of show jumping that is part of the Winter Equestrian Festival, which draws horses and people from around the world. The club is on 120 acres and was built specifically to house the nation’s top horse show jumping, dressage and steeplechase events. The St. Thomas More event begins with a lunch at 1 p.m., followed by the horse competition. Donations are $100 and all proceeds go to benefit a parish mission to Honduras. Reservations are required. Bereavement workshop plannedKaren Modell, a chaplain and services manager for Vitas Bereavement Services, a hospice care organization, will be at the Pastoral Center in Palm Beach Gardens March 13 to present a workshop for all those who work in areas of bereavement. The workshop, which will be held 1-3 p.m., is presented through the diocesan family life offices. The event is designed to gather people of similar ministries and to discuss areas of bereavement work. Seats are limited. Call 561-775-9557 for reservations. OBITUARY Carmelite Father William Smith, 79Father William Smith, a Carmelite who retired to Lourdes-Noreen McKeen Retirement Center in West Palm Beach in 2007, after more than 50 years of active ministry, died Feb. 17 at the age of 79.
