Art honors priests

BOCA RATON | Larry Winker, president of the Serra Club of South Palm Beach County, came up with what many might consider a very appropriate design for an art contest to promote vocations to the priesthood and recognize Priesthood Sunday, Oct. 28, a day set aside to honor priests.

“It is perfect for Priesthood Sunday,” said Winker. His design details a priest holding up the Eucharist, with a family holding hands looking on in the background. “I am taking it to the schools. I think many of the teachers will like it.”

Pictures and art project details were delivered this month to schools at St. Mark in Boynton Beach, St. Vincent Ferrer and Emanuel in Delray Beach; and Ascension, St. Lucy, St. Joan and St. Jude in Boca Raton. Students were asked to color the 8-" by 11" pictures using crayons, colored pencils or markers.

“It is fine,” said Deborah Armstrong, principal, when Winker delivered a large stack of 400 pictures for the students at St. Jude School. “The children can make it a religion project.”

The Serra Club, which promotes vocations to the priesthood and religious life, suggested that the finished drawings be displayed in churches and other areas of parishes and schools during the week leading up to Priesthood Sunday, as well as the actual day.

“It is a good project,” said Sister Mary Clare Fennell, Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, principal of St. Vincent Ferrer School. “It makes the children aware of vocations.”

“I think it is fun,” said Vivian Cheslak as she painstakingly worked to finish her picture during fifth-grade classes at St. Vincent Ferrer.
