OBITUARYSister Ellen M. Murphy, 84Dominican Sister Ellen M. Murphy, formerly known as Rita Anne Murphy, died March 1 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Mich. She was 84 and ministered in religious life for 66 years. Sister Murphy was born in Toledo, Ohio, to William and Mary Murphy. She graduated from St. Joseph Academy in Adrian, Mich., and received a bachelor’s degree in Latin from Barry College (now University) in Miami, a master’s degree in Latin from Loyola University in Chicago and a master’s degree in education from the University of Dayton in Ohio. She spent 49 years as an educator in Illinois, Florida, Michigan and Ohio. While living in Florida, she worked as an educator for 10 years: as a teacher at St. Patrick in Miami Beach from 1947 to 1952; at Central Catholic High School in Fort Lauderdale from 1958 to 1961; and at Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach from 1961 to 1963. She became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 1998 and is survived by loving nieces and nephews. A funeral liturgy was held in St. Catherine Chapel March 5, followed by a burial in the congregation cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 E.
