OBITUARYCarmelite Father William Smith, 79Father William Smith, a Carmelite who retired to Lourdes-Noreen McKeen Retirement Center in West Palm Beach in 2007, after more than 50 years of active ministry, died Feb. 17 at the age of 79. Born July 6, 1929, to the late Joseph and Kathleen Smith of Chicago, he enrolled at the Mount Carmel Preparatory Seminary in Niagara Falls, Ontario, at age 16 and first professed vows in Aug. 1948. He was ordained to the priesthood May 29, 1954, at St. Clara Church in Chicago. During his first years as a priest, he taught at Mount Carmel High School and D’Youville College in Buffalo, N.Y. In 1975 he received his first assignment as pastor, moving to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Houston. In 1981, he began a nine-year tenure at St. Gertrude in Stockton, Calif. Between 1990 and 1994, he served as pastor of St. Raphael Parish in Los Angeles. He served Transfiguration Parish in Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico, until retirement. Father Smith is survived by his sister, Marilyn Hogan, and her husband, Dick Hogan, of Wellington; his brother Robert Smith of Chicago; and many loving nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Thérèse de Lisieux Parish in Wellington Feb. 21. He was buried at Venice Memorial Gardens in Venice.
