It’s official: Ocala’s needy get best chili in townBlessed Trinity's Brother's Keeper Soup Kitchen wins cookoff.
Soup kitchen volunteers Janet Dell, Dave Ross and “Shorty,” right, who goes by his nickname, serve up their prize winning chili at the 26th annual Marion County Chili Cookoff Oct. 13. OCALA — Five years ago Jack Baker, a Tuesday volunteer at the Brother’s Keeper Soup Kitchen here, suggested, “We should enter that annual Marion County chili cooking contest. Our chili is really good.” He was right, and the volunteers from the soup kitchen, an outreach of Blessed Trinity Parish, have won $300 and 14 trophies including 2007’s best of show salsa, best of show presentation and best of show chili grand champions. The purpose for the soup kitchen volunteers is to promote awareness in the community, solicit additional volunteers and solicit food and financial donations. The soup kitchen was started in the early 1970s, and 10 volunteers a day under the direction of Immaculate Heart of Mary Sister Concepta Najjemba, serve 250 to 300 meals to the homeless, needy and marginalized in downtown Ocala. The 2007 event was at the Marion County Agricultural Center Oct. 13, and a crowd estimated at more than 5,000 attended. Dozens of businesses, civic organizations and government departments participated.
