Diocese policy helps the divorced feel less isolated

Digna Montanez, new to the diocesan Family Life Office, is responsible for the implementation of programs that support the many stages and issues of life in a family — including separation and divorce.

"We want to show God's love to the people and support them through their struggles," she said.

Divorced Catholics may have felt stigmatized and isolated in the past. However, Montanez was eager to point out diocesan policy. "The Catholic Diocese of Orlando recognizes the difficult nature of life at this time and extends ministry to those who are separated or divorced through the Family Life Office," she said.

Myths surrounding divorce are frequently the obstacles that people believe separate them from the church and the sacraments.

Montanez corrected the two predominant misconceptions: Divorced Catholics are not excommunicated, and they have a right to seek an annulment of the marriage.

She also emphasized that separated and divorced Catholics are encouraged to participate in parish life and the sacraments, continue to develop their faith life and accept God's forgiveness for themselves, and extend that forgiveness to their former spouses. Many of the parishes offer a "New Beginnings" support group to assist in healing from a broken relationship.

In addition, people seeking annulments should contact their pastors who will be able to assist in the process, often by referring them to an annulment advocate.

Montanez quoted from "Follow the Way of Love," the pastoral message of the U.S. bishops to families: "Relationships and circumstances within your family may have changed, but God's love for you is ever-present and does not come to an end.

"Grasp the hands of those who reach out to you in loving concern. Extend your own hand to others whom you meet on the road to healing and reconciliation. There is a home for you within our parishes and communities of faith."
