Media Center spring picks

The staff of the diocesan Media Resource Center recommends the following DVD selections on various topics of interest to Catholics.

“You Could Make a Difference” (DVD-0403)

This resource, in English and Spanish, aids groups interested in vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Viewers can examine what is needed for public ministry and see if they know people, even themselves, who might be urged to pursue life as a priest or religious. (17 minutes; high school, adult)

“The Narrow Path: Walking Toward Peace and Nonviolence” (DVD-0413)

This is a bold and challenging film that addresses the poverty of hope and imagination, and enslavement to our most base and unenlightened thinking. Director Gerry Straub documents the life of Jesuit Father John Dear, a celebrated peace activist and author. His life story has been a journey into the radical message of the Gospel and Jesus’ instruction to love our enemies. Father Dear, who has been arrested and imprisoned more than 75 times, crisscrosses the country and the world tirelessly preaching the message of the nonviolent Jesus. This film may upset and disturb many people, but the Gospel is disturbing, if taken seriously. Gerry Straub writes that making this film changed the lives of those who made it and he prays that it changes the lives of those who watch it. (108 minutes; high school, adult)

“Bridge to Forgiveness: Bible Study for Youth” (DVD-0369)

This DVD for teens on forgiveness re-enacts the story of Jacob and Esau. It includes comments from youths on their experiences with hurt, anger and forgiveness, and features Ken Medema performing his original song, “Healing of the Heart.” Includes an excellent study guide with biblical background, discussion questions and additional activities. (13 minutes; high school)

“Big Al Live! Gospel Values for Children-Special Occasions” (DVD-0300D)

Each DVD in this series presents 10 different Gospel values. These brief (approximately five to seven minutes each) and engaging presentations include a short Scripture reading, a reflection from Father Joe Kempf, a discussion with Big Al and a prayer. The messages were written for people of all ages to explore and share together. Excellent for intergenerational faith gatherings, for beginning a parish meeting, parent programs of any kind, children’s Liturgy of the Word, children’s religious education classes, etc. Volume four topics include baptism, Advent; Christmas; reconciliation; Lent; Easter; Eucharist; Mother’s Day; Father’s Day and Halloween. Discussion guide included. (50 minutes; kindergarten, primary, intermediate, adult)

“Turning the Tide: Dignity, Compassion and Euthanasia” (DVD-0411)

In 2005, efforts to change the laws to legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide were before the legislative bodies in Canada and California. Although they did not pass, efforts to legalize assisted suicide have not abated. In this film, a variety of experts bring a wealth of personal experience and insight to a society that would be at risk if assisted suicide were legalized. They expose the oversimplification, flaws and myths surrounding safeguards, pain management and suffering. They offer tangible solutions as to what needs to be done to improve the quality of life for all concerned, and make a strong case that vulnerable people are directly threatened by euthanasia and assisted suicide. It’s time to let our voices be heard because if the laws are changed, we’ll be fighting for our lives. (29 minutes; high school, adult)
