School boards receive national recognitionFather Lopez High School and the Diocese of Orlando school boards are honored by the National Catholic Educational Association. The Diocese of Orlando provides elementary and high school education to more than 15,000 students in 37 schools throughout nine counties. ORLANDO | The school boards of Father Lopez Catholic High School in Daytona Beach and the Diocese of Orlando were recognized by the National Catholic Educational Association as “outstanding boards.” The association honored more than 70 people and organizations for outstanding service to Catholic education during its annual convention March 25-28 in Indianapolis. To qualify for the outstanding board award, given by the association’s Department of Boards and Councils of Catholic Education, a board must have been in existence at least five years and must have been a substantial part of the governance of a school or parish or diocese. Father Lopez’s board and the Orlando diocesan board were the only Florida boards honored, according to the association. “The involvement of laypersons in the governance of our schools is extremely important as we look to the future of our Catholic schools,” said Nicholas Wolsonovich, secretary for faith formation and superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Orlando. “Board members volunteer their time and talents to provide the solutions to the many challenges facing our schools. School boards serve an important function at both the local school and diocese levels. We are very proud of the role our boards play in the governance of our schools and the positive impact they have had on our schools’ success.” Father Timothy Daly, president of Father Lopez High School, told the Florida Catholic: “As the prayer of St. Francis says, ‘It is in giving that we receive.’ The community of Father Lopez Catholic High School is grateful for the faithful commitment our school board has demonstrated over the past five years. School board leaders have truly given of themselves in service of Catholic education in Volusia County. The members humbly received this award only because of their love and service of the Lord and his church.” Tanya Goodman of the Florida Catholic staff and Florida Catholic correspondent Laura Dodson contributed to this story.
