Our Lady of Perpetual Help celebrates last Mass

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, set to merge with St. James Oct. 1, invites former parishioners and school alumni to a last Mass and coffee at the Opa-Locka church, 13401 N.W. 28 Ave., on Sunday, Sept. 27, 10:30 a.m. Participants are asked to bring a breakfast item to share, as well as coolers, other beverages and lawn chairs.

A picnic also will take place Saturday, Sept. 26, 11 a.m.- 8 p.m., at Greynolds Park, 17530 W. Dixie Highway, North Miami Beach. Participants are asked to bring a dish and dessert to share, their own main dish, such as hot dogs or hamburgers, coolers, beverages, grills and recreational items such as balls, bats, and Frisbees. Paper goods will be supplied.

Novenas highlight Peruvian devotion

South Florida parishes will host novenas and other events at the end of this month and the beginning of October to honor El Señor de los Milagros (the Lord of Miracles), an image of a dark-skinned Christ revered as miraculous by Peruvians and considered the country’s patron.

A vigil and night of meditation will be held Wednesday, Sept. 30, 8 p.m., at Our Lady Queen of Heaven, 1400 S. State Road 7, North Lauderdale. It will be followed by a novena that will start Oct. 1, 8 p.m., at the church. Our Lady Queen of Heaven also will host a procession with an image of El Señor de los Milagros on Saturday, Oct. 17, after 7 p.m. Mass.

The 7-foot-tall image, which has resided in south Florida for 14 years, is housed at Our Lady Queen of Heaven, where the Hermandad del Señor de los Milagros (Brotherhood of the Lord of Miracles) is based. The group has been in existence in south Florida for 26 years and is dedicated to spreading the faith and devotion to El Señor de los Milagros. Cathedral school to mark 70th

St. Mary Cathedral School, founded in 1939 and celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, invites all alumni and members of the community to a Mass of thanksgiving to be celebrated by Archbishop John C. Favalora on Friday, Oct. 2, 10 a.m., at the cathedral, 7525 N.W. Second Ave., Miami.

At this Mass, the Regina Coeli award will be bestowed upon James and Grace Colross for their dedication and commitment to the cathedral school. Following the Mass, faculty and students will host an open house. For information call 305-759-4531.

Habitat launches ‘Brush with Kindness’

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami is taking applications to help homeowners needing “A Brush with Kindness.” This is a nationwide housing preservation program that assists low-income homeowners impacted by age, disability and family circumstances by bringing volunteers to perform minor repairs around their homes.

Applicants must show proof of homeownership and residency in Miami-Dade County, demonstrate financial need, contribute a small share of the project costs, and intend to stay in the home for at least three years after repairs are completed. For information, call 305-634-3628 or go HERE.

Agape helps heal from divorce

The archdiocesan ministry to the Spanish-speaking divorced and separated – part of the Family Enrichment Center – will host a Resurrección en Ágape (Agape Resurrection) retreat Oct. 23-25 for those who wish to begin healing from the pain of separation and divorce.

The retreat is open to all people of faith and will take place at the Southeast Pastoral Institute, 7700 S.W. 56 St., Miami. Cost is $90, but help is available for those who cannot afford it.

‘Catechetical morning’ planned

“Catechesis and the Proclamation of the Word” is the theme for this year’s catechetical morning, to be held Saturday, Nov. 7, 7:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., at Our Lady of the Lakes Parish, 15801 N.W. 67 Ave., Miami Lakes. Hosted by the archdiocesan Department of Religious Education, the morning is aimed at catechetical leaders, catechists, pastors and all Catholic educators, including parents.

Keynote speakers will be Sister Carol Cimino, a Sister of St. Joseph of Rochester, N.Y., and national consultant for the William H. Sadlier textbook company, who will speak in English; and George Briz, director of religious education at St. Michael Parish, Miami, who will speak in Spanish. Breakout sessions will be led by Sue DeFerrari in English and Rogelio Zelada in Spanish.

Faith rally aimed at middle schoolers

Catholic Servant Ministries Inc. and Franciscan University of Steubenville will host the first annual middle school day rally for south Florida youths in sixth, seventh and eighth grades on Saturday, Nov. 7, 9 a.m.-9 p.m., at the Borland Center in Palm Beach Gardens.

The day’s theme, “Above All” (1 Chronicles 29:11), centers on the greatness, power and glory of God above all that is in heaven and on earth. The message to young people is that the world “downsizes” God and faith, and “lifts up” its own desires. Registration for groups and volunteers is now open at www.CatholicServantMinistries.com.

Vigil recalls needs of homeless youths

Students from several Broward high schools and adult supporters will gather to keep the light of hope burning for homeless youths during the 18th annual candlelight vigil hosted by Covenant House Florida.

The vigil will take Thursday, Nov. 12, 6:30 p.m., at Archbishop McCarthy High School, 5451 S. Flamingo Road, Southwest Ranches. It will feature a somber candlelight walk to represent walking a mile in the shoes of a homeless youth. The vigil also will feature music, inspirational speakers and refreshments.

Covenant House Florida is one of the largest private agencies serving runaway and homeless youths in the state. It opened in Fort Lauderdale in 1985 and expanded to Orlando in 1995. Last year, the organization reached more than 200 teens a day via street outreach, crisis shelters, transitional housing projects, and walk-in and aftercare services. Holy Rosary to mark 50th

Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Parish – the first to be established after the creation of the Diocese of Miami – will mark its golden anniversary with a Mass Sunday, Oct. 4, 10:00 a.m., on the parish grounds at 9500 S.W. 184 St., Cutler Bay. Archbishop John C. Favalora will be the main concelebrant.

Holy Rosary was the name of the parish where Archbishop Coleman F. Carroll was baptized in his native Pittsburgh. He also was installed as bishop of Miami on Oct. 7, 1958, the feast of the Holy Rosary.

The community of Holy Rosary now numbers more than 2,400 families and a parish school opened in 1960. For the past three years, parishioners have gathered for Mass in the former parish hall, as irreparable water leaks forced a church complex dedicated in 1995 to be torn down.

Dealing with loss? Wellspring can help

The Wellspring Experience, a live-in weekend for those who want to deal with unresolved feelings of loss due to separation, divorce or death, will take place Oct. 16-18 at Shula’s Hotel, 6842 Main St., Miami Lakes.

Wellspring is part of the archdiocesan family life ministry’s outreach to people who are separated or divorced. The weekend features talks given by persons with experience in the grief process, anger, aloneness, dealing with baggage, entanglement, forgiveness, wholeness and spiritual growth. There is time for personal reflection and sharing in small groups, and the weekend ends with the celebration of Mass.
