Maverick Players earn Cappies nods

Archbishop McCarthy High School’s production of the “Curious Savage” earned Cappies nominations for a number of the Maverick Players. Cappies is a national critics and awards program for high school theater.

The cast and crew of “The Curious Savage” were nominated for the following Cappies awards:

• Best lead actress: junior Erica Ramos;

• Best comedic actress: sophomore Tessa Galindo;

• Best group ensemble: juniors Natalia Selin and Kevin McCartney and seniors Taylor Eljaua and Jonathan Diaz.

“The Cappies organization host a gala every year – modeled after the Tony Awards – recognizing outstanding student work,” said Cindy Keegan, McCarthy High’s theater director.

St. Mark students ‘power’ the future

Two projects from St. Mark School in Southwest Ranches received awards at the 54th State Science & Engineering Fair held April 15-17 in Lakeland.

In engineering, second place was awarded to seventh-grader Lauren Ferrara for her project, “Waiting Woes.” The project also earned Lauren a plaque and $500 for outstanding project in engineering from the Florida Engineering Foundation and a plaque and $100 for outstanding project from the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Eighth-graders Aidan Alvarez and Alexander Marsh took third place in the team category for their project, “Solar Reflectors.”

“I am so proud of these students whose hard work and dedication should be recognized,” said Georgina Lindskoog, their science teacher.
