Ministry school enrollment openThe Archdiocese of Miami’s School of Ministry forms and trains lay men and women who desire to grow in their understanding of their Catholic identity and in their ability to serve. The school’s programs have three components: human and spiritual growth, theological formation and pastoral training. The formation program has been developed with sensitivity toward language and cultural differences in order to foster and enable lay ministry and leadership in the Archdiocese of Miami. Classes are offered in English, Spanish or Creole in Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe counties, beginning in September. For more information or to apply, call the Office of Lay Ministry and Adult Faith Formation at 305-762-1184 or 954-525-5157, ext. 1184. Caregivers learn to avoid burnoutProfessional caregivers, counselors and educators gathered at St. Thomas University Feb. 1 to take part in a workshop that helped them acquire the skills necessary to avoid burnout, compassion fatigue and stress. Hosted by St. Thomas’ School of Theology and Ministry, the “training as treatment” conference featured Dr. Eric Gentry, a recognized leader in the study and treatment of compassion fatigue. Gentry and St. Thomas faculty members Mary Carter Warren and Mercedes Iannone led the all-day event, which helped participants understand the causes, treatment and prevention of caregiver stress. Following a number of exercises and workshops, the caregivers were able to develop a five-point, self-directed “professional resiliency plan” that they can integrate into their professional practice and personal life. St. Thomas University offers a spiritual companionship program that offers coursework in theology, psychology and human development. For more information, contact Carter Warren at mwaren@stu.edu.
