Celebrate Laetare with Vanaver CaravanSt. Martha Parish invites the community to celebrate Laetare Sunday — the fourth Sunday of Lent, traditionally a respite from the sacrificial season — by enjoying “Pastures of Plenty,” a rousing musical production by Vanaver Caravan that is part of the St. Martha-Yamaha concert series. “Back when we were planning this event, Father Federico Capdepon (St. Martha’s pastor) and I looked into the history of Laetare Sunday, and came to believe that St. Martha’s had a unique opportunity to revive some longstanding, deeply rooted church traditions,” said parishioner Julie Williamson. During Laetare Sunday, celebrated this year the weekend of March 1-2, the priest is allowed to wear rose-colored vestments rather than Lenten purple. The day also has been called “Mithering” or “Mothering Sunday,” where persons return to the “mother church” for the celebrations. In medieval times, simnel cake was served on this day, and young girls in service often were allowed home. The cake became a way of celebrating the reuniting of families during the austerity of Lent. “The uniting of the south Florida community, of all beliefs and non-beliefs, ages and backgrounds, in our atrium, is a manifestation today of the family homecomings of Laetare Sunday,” said Williamson. “Pastures of Plenty” is an exciting evening of down-home, high-spirited dance and music inspired by the “father of the American folksong revival,” Woody Guthrie. It features typically American dances and musical styles, from Bluegrass banjo to New England fiddling, southern Appalachian clog dancing to Virginia reels and urban “stomp dancing.” The performances will take place Saturday, March 1, 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, March 2, 3 p.m., at 9401 Biscayne Blvd., Miami Shores. Single tickets are $10 general admission and $20 Blue Circle, and include an after-concert reception with the artists.
