Brief news items from around the Archdiocese of Miami

Archdiocese celebrates Catholic schools

Archbishop John C. Favalora will be the main celebrant at a Mass kicking off this year’s celebration of Catholic Schools Week, Sunday, Jan. 27, 10 a.m., at St. Mary Cathedral, 7525 Pope John Paul II Ave. (Northwest Second Avenue), Miami. Students from various archdiocesan schools will be in attendance and the public is welcome to attend.

“Catholic schools in the archdiocese provide a great environment for children to learn and grow. We also are celebrating the accomplishments of students and schools and the impact on the community,” said Kristen Hughes, archdiocesan superintendent of elementary schools. This year’s Catholic Schools Week theme, “Catholic Schools Light the Way,” focuses on the leadership that Catholic schools provide, producing graduates who light the way to a brighter future for all humanity. The theme also highlights the spiritual foundation of Catholic schools, reminding students and staff that they are called to “light the way” to the kingdom for others even as they themselves walk “the way” of discipleship and grow in faith.

All proceeds will go toward reduction of the parish debt. A 50th anniversary souvenir journal also is being prepared. Resurrection is at 441 N.E. Second St., Dania Beach. Father Kidwell was known for his devotion to young people and the pro-life movement. Another Mass in his memory was celebrated Jan. 22 at St. Richard Parish in Miami, one of the parishes where he had served. He was buried Jan. 18 in his native Alabama.

Fundraiser aids military chaplains

The Archdiocese for the Military Services USA will hold a fundraising cocktail party Tuesday, Feb. 5, 6 p.m., at the Fort Lauderdale River House Restaurant. Funds will go toward ensuring that those dedicated to defending this country always will have access to spiritual and pastoral support.

Archbishop Timothy Paul Broglio, head of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, will attend the fundraiser.

“Imagine being uprooted from your family and your home, going into a dangerous situation, watching your buddies get killed and seeing the worst of humanity. These soldiers may not have the answers or any family to turn to where they are, but they’ll have God,” said Jody Moore, a self-described “military brat” who is leading the fundraising effort.

Pope John Paul II created the Archdiocese for the Military Services in 1985. Today, with more than 1,000 priests, the archdiocese serves more than 375,000 men and women in uniform and more than 900,000 military family members. In addition to the 30 percent of military personnel who are Catholic, the archdiocese also ministers to the 300,000-plus Catholics in the reserves, Coast Guard, government service overseas and those in Veterans Administration hospitals.

Tickets to the fundraiser are $250 per person, $350 per couple or $300 per person at the door. R.S.V.P. to 954-332-2424.

Noted theologian speaks at seminary

Noted Catholic theologian David Tracy will present, “On Being Awake: The Relationship of Philosophy and Theology to Spirituality,” at the annual St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary Academic Day, Thursday, Jan. 31, in the seminary auditorium, 10701 S. Military Trail, Boynton Beach.

Tracy is the Andrew Thomas Greeley and Grace McNichols Greeley Distinguished Service Professor of Catholic Studies at the University of Chicago Divinity School, and one of the most widely recognized and respected Catholic theologians in the world. His work seeks to correlate the Christian tradition and contemporary situation in a way that is both mutually illuminating and mutually critical.

Academic Day is an annual event at St. Vincent de Paul Seminary, during which seminarians, nonresident students, faculty, alumni, and interested guests come together for a series of lectures and dialogues with noted Catholic theologians. The Faith and Reason Conference of St. John Vianney Seminary is an annual event which was inspired by Pope John Paul II’s 1998 encyclical of the same name. This is the first year that both conferences are being combined into one event. For information, visit www.svdp.edu or call 561-732-4424.
