Obituary: Father Richard P. Scherer, 83

The former hospital chaplain who ministered at Holy Cross and Mercy hospitals was known as a ‘people priest’.

MIAMI | Those who worked with Father Richard P. Scherer remember him as a “people person” who loved serving as a hospital chaplain and whose ministry extended beyond the patients to include everyone on the hospital’s staff.

“He was loved by all,” said Sister Immaculate Moraglia, a Sister of St. Joseph who worked with Father Scherer at Mercy Hospital in Miami from his arrival there in 1975 until his retirement from active ministry in 1992. Read the full story HERE.

Archdiocese responds to new abuse allegation

The following statement was released Dec. 20, 2007, by the archdiocesan Communications Department, in response to a new lawsuit filed against the archdiocese.

The Archdiocese of Miami has learned of an allegation of sexual abuse made against Father Donald Walk. Father Walk is a retired priest without faculties currently residing in Venice, Fla. A priest without faculties is restricted from being able to serve as a priest and cannot wear a clerical collar or clothes.

The archdiocese takes any allegation seriously and, as stated in our policy, we report the allegations to the State Attorney’s Office, start the process of healing and reconciliation for the alleged victim and accused, and present all the information to the Archdiocesan Review Board.

The Archdiocese of Miami once again asks if anyone has been a victim of sexual abuse by a member of the clergy or church personnel to come forward by contacting the archdiocese’s Victims Assistance Coordinator at 1-866-802-2873, or contacting your local law enforcement department.
