New monsignors named for south Florida

MIAMI | Twelve Miami priests have been elevated to the rank of monsignor, and three who are currently monsignors have been elevated to a higher rank by Pope Benedict XVI

The conferral of papal honors was announced Dec. 7 by Archbishop John C. Favalora.

“These honors represent the Holy Father’s affection for the dedicated work of all of the clergy here in Miami,” the archbishop said. “Some of them have been singled out for the papal distinction because of their years of service, others because of the position and special ministry they serve, and still others as representatives of ethnic and cultural groups within the archdiocese.”

Those who were upgraded in rank are: Msgr. William Hennessey, vicar general, named protonotary apostolic supernumerary; Msgr. Andrew Anderson, judicial vicar, and Msgr. Michael Souckar, chancellor, named prelates of honor to his holiness.

The following priests have been named prelates of honor or chaplain to his holiness, distinctions which carry the title “reverend monsignor”. Those named prelates of honor to his holiness are:

• Father Seamus Doyle, pastor, St. Rose of Lima Parish, Miami Shores
• Father Martin J. Cassidy, pastor, Assumption Parish, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea
• Father Pedro García, pastor, St. Ann Mission, Naranja
• Father James Parappally, pastor, Our Lady of Mercy Parish, Deerfield Beach
• Father Pedro Luis Pérez, pastor, San Lazaro Parish, Hialeah
• Father Emilio Martín, pastor, St. John the Apostle Parish, Hialeah
• Father Frederick J. Brice, pastor, St. Paul the Apostle Parish, Lighthouse Point

Those named chaplains to his holiness are:

• Father Michael Carruthers, rector, St. John Vianney College Seminary, Miami
• Father Oscar Castañeda, rector, Shrine of Our Lady of Charity, Miami
• Father Kenneth Schwanger, adjutant judicial vicar and pastor, St. Jerome Parish, Fort Lauderdale
• Father Jean Pierre, director, Office of the Propagation of the Faith and pastor, St. James Parish, North Miami
• Father Terence Hogan, rector, St. Mary Cathedral and archdiocesan director, Office of Worship and Spiritual Life.

Papal honors are limited by regulation based on the number of total clergy. The ceremony to confer the documents will be set for a Sunday afternoon at St. Mary Cathedral, but the date has not been announced.

“I take this opportunity to express my congratulations to them on behalf of everyone in the archdiocese, and I want to commend them to you for your prayers and support,” Archbishop Favalora said.
