Catholic singer to perform at Marlins game

Jaci Velasquez will be featured Aug. 16 as part of team’s Super Saturdays concert.

MIAMI | Internationally known Catholic singer Jaci Velasquez will perform Aug. 16 at Dolphins Stadium, the first Christian artist to be featured in the Florida Marlins’ Super Saturdays concert series.

Velasquez, 28, is one of the world’s most successful Christian/Latin pop singers, a multiple Grammy and Dove Awards nominee who has won both Billboard’s and Latin Billboard’s Pop Album of the Year. She will perform at the conclusion of the 7 p.m. game against the Chicago Cubs.

“They’ve been trying to figure out what performers, what artists would work, what wouldn’t work. They’d never tried a Christian artist before,” said Chris Wills, founder and director of God Squad Communications, who is helping the Marlins promote the concert.

“We’re here to support people and organizations, like the Marlins, that are willing to go out and do things that cater to the Christian community, the faith-based community down here,” he said.

Wills exhorted people of all faiths to come out to the ballgame to demonstrate that Christian artists do have a following in south Florida.

“I hope that the largest number is from the Catholic community,” he added.

Super Saturdays feature pregame parties at the Strike Zone at Gate H, parking-lot giveaways for the first 5,000 cars and interactive giveaways for the first 15,000 fans to arrive at the stadium. After the game, fans are treated to fireworks and the concert, all of which are included in the price of admission to the game.

On Aug. 16, God Squad Communications has added another event to Super Saturday: Auditions for the second annual Voice of an Angel contest.

All ticket-holders who arrive by 5 p.m. will be guaranteed an opportunity to audition. Those without tickets may wait in the stand-by line for their chance to audition.

“Because Voice of an Angel seeks to find talent from within the Catholic community, in order to audition you must provide valid proof of registration at a Catholic parish, Catholic high school or Catholic university within the Archdiocese of Miami,” said Wills, who began the contest last year.
