Nine priests celebrate anniversaries

MIAMI | Nine archdiocesan priests marking 25 or 50 years of ordination this year are on the list to be honored during the chrism Mass celebrated the Tuesday of Holy Week. Following are brief biographies of the jubilarians.
GOLDEN JUBILARIANS — 50 YEARS
Father Gerald McGrath
Born in Norwood, N.Y., Oct. 25, 1925, Father McGrath studied at Wadhams Hall Seminary College in Ogdensburg, N.Y., and St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore before being ordained for the Diocese of Ogdensburg May 31, 1958. In 1972, he earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He arrived in Miami in July 1974 and was incardinated as an archdiocesan priest Jan. 19, 1978. He has served at St. Rose of Lima and St. Martha parishes in Miami Shores, St. Kieran and St. Francis Xavier in Miami and St. John the Baptist in Fort Lauderdale; as principal at Archbishop Curley High School (now Archbishop Curley Notre Dame) and St. Brendan High School in Miami; and as chaplain of the Catholic Educators Guild. He served as pastor of St. Mary Star of the Sea in Key West until his retirement in April 2002.
Father Charles Peterman
Born June 11, 1932, in Pittsburgh, Father Peterman entered St. Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, Pa., right after high school and was ordained for the Diocese of Pittsburgh May 31, 1958. He worked in that diocese until 1982, when he came to Miami and was incardinated Aug. 1, 1988. He has served at St. John the Baptist in Fort Lauderdale, St. David in Davie, St. Brendan in Miami, and is parochial vicar at St. Ambrose in Deerfield Beach.
SILVER JUBILARIANS — 25 YEARS
Auxiliary Bishop John Noonan
Born in Limerick, Ireland, Feb. 26, 1951, Bishop Noonan moved to the United States after high school to attend Fordham University in New York. After two years there, he spent a year at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, then entered St. John Vianney Seminary in Miami. He graduated from St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach and was ordained for the archdiocese Sept. 23, 1983. He has served at St. Elizabeth of Hungary in Pompano Beach and St. Rose of Lima in Miami Shores; and as chaplain of youth ministry in Broward County, assistant principal at Msgr. Edward Pace High School in Miami Gardens, principal at St. Brendan High School in Miami, dean of students and president/rector of St. John Vianney Seminary. In 2001, he was made a monsignor and named director of priestly life and ministry in the archdiocese. He became the ninth auxiliary bishop of Miami June 21, 2005, and was ordained to the episcopacy Aug. 24, 2005.
Father Federico Capdepón
Father Capdepón was born in Miranda de Ebro, Spain, April 12, 1951. After completing his military service and some seminary studies in Madrid, as well as opening a business, he came to Miami and graduated with an education degree from Biscayne College (now St. Thomas University) prior to entering St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary. He was ordained for the archdiocese May 14, 1983, and has served at Sts. Peter and Paul, St. Timothy, Corpus Christi and Mother of Our Redeemer parishes in Miami; St. James in North Miami and Little Flower in Hollywood. He also served as director of youth ministry and, from 1992 to 2001, as founding director of Radio Paz/Radio Peace, the archdiocesan radio ministry. Since 2002, he has served as the pastor of St. Martha in Miami Shores.
Father José Espino
Born in Guantánamo, Cuba, April 6, 1956, Father Espino came to Miami with his family while he was in elementary school. He attended North Twin Lakes Elementary, Palm Springs Junior High and Hialeah-Miami Lakes High School, as well as Miami Dade College, before entering St. John Vianney Seminary. He graduated from St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary and was ordained for the archdiocese May 14, 1983. He has served at Corpus Christi and Good Shepherd in Miami, St. Ann in Naranja, Sacred Heart in Homestead, Holy Family in North Miami and Our Lady of the Holy Rosary in Cutler Bay (formerly Perrine). He also was chaplain at Homestead Air Force Base, director of the rural life office and director of youth ministry before spending five years — from 1999 to 2004 — on special assignment in his former home Diocese of Guantanamo-Baracoa, Cuba. Upon his return, he worked as director of pretheology at St. John Vianney Seminary. He serves as chaplain at Hollywood Memorial Hospital while residing at St. Mary Magdalen Parish in Sunny Isles Beach.
Father Lesly Jean
Father Jean was born Aug. 10, 1955, in Petit-Goave, Haiti, where he remained until entering the high school seminary in Port-au-Prince. He was ordained for the Archdiocese of Port-au-Prince March 31, 1983, and served in parishes in Port-au-Prince, Grand-Bois and Petion-Ville until 1997, when he arrived in the archdiocese. He has served at Notre Dame d’Haiti in Miami, as a faculty member at St. John Vianney Seminary, and as parochial vicar at Holy Family in North Miami. He serves as parochial vicar at Sacred Heart in Homestead.
Father Liam Quinn
Father Quinn was born July 11, 1954, in Dublin, Ireland, but moved with his family to Metuchen, N.J., while in junior high school. He completed his secondary education at South Broward High School and attended Broward Community College before entering St. John Vianney Seminary. He graduated from St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary and was ordained for the archdiocese May 14, 1983. He has served at Immaculate Conception and St. Benedict parishes in Hialeah, St. Michael and Prince of Peace in Miami, and St. Philip in Opa-Locka. Beginning in 1990, he served at Msgr. Edward Pace High School for six years, then spent a decade as spiritual director at Christopher Columbus High School in Miami. In December 2006, he assumed his current responsibilities as pastor of St. Sebastian Parish in Fort Lauderdale.
Father Robert F. Tywoniak
Father Tywoniak was born in Passaic, N.J., April 8, 1957, and moved to south Florida with his family as a teenager, graduating from Coconut Creek High School. He attended Stetson University and Broward Community College before entering St. John Vianney Seminary in 1976. After graduating from St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary, he was ordained for the archdiocese May 14, 1983. He worked for Catholic Community Services and served at Nativity in Hollywood, St. Ann Mission in Naranja, St. Mary Cathedral, St. Thomas the Apostle and Mother of Christ in Miami, and St. Mark in Fort Lauderdale. Since 1997, he has served as pastor of St. George Parish in Fort Lauderdale.
Father Joseph D. Valoret
Father Valoret was born March 13, 1932, in Havana, Cuba. He studied there in schools run by the De La Salle Brothers, ultimately graduating with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. After coming to south Florida, he entered St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in 1978 and was ordained for the archdiocese May 14, 1983. He served at Visitation Parish in North Miami, St. Agnes in Key Biscayne, St. Augustine in Coral Gables, the Shrine of Our Lady of Charity in Miami, as chaplain of St. Anne Nursing Home in south Dade, and at St. Brendan Parish in Miami and St. Helen in Fort Lauderdale, from where he retired in 1993.
