Save the FRAG

MARLENE QUARONI | FC
MIAMI | Janice Lawrence, left, a senior history major, Barry University mascot Bucky, and Shavonne Dawson, a senior business management major, take part in a campus protest against Gov. Charlie Crist’s proposal to take away the Florida Resident Access Grant, commonly known as the FRAG. The grant gives $3,000 annually in scholarship money to students attending nonprofit colleges and universities in Florida. According to statistics compiled by Barry University, more than 2,500 of its students receive the FRAG. One-third of them also qualify for federal low–income Pell Grants, one half are the first generation in their families to go to college, 43 percent are minorities, 35 percent come from families with incomes of less than $60,000 a year and 27 percent are nontraditional students 25 and over who are working and raising families.
