St. Monica School to closeDeclining enrollment and financial deficits are cited in decision to close school. ![]()
“This was a very difficult decision,” said Kristen B. Hughes, superintendent of schools for the Archdiocese of Miami. MIAMI | The Archdiocese of Miami announced Feb. 20 that St. Monica School, 3490 N.W. 191 St., Carol City, will close at the end of the school year. “This was a very difficult decision,” said Kristen B. Hughes, superintendent of schools for the archdiocese, “but the economics of the situation required a decision that preserves the immediate well-being of the students, teachers, and staff of St. Monica, as well as the overall Catholic community.” According to Hughes the key factors that resulted in the decision to close the kindergarten through eighth grade school were a steady decline in enrollment, increased operating budget deficits, and the uncertainty of the economy. “The Archdiocese of Miami has committed more than $2.7 million over the past seven years to St. Monica’s to help meet its budget needs,” Hughes said. “This type of announcement is never easy, particularly for our dedicated faculty and staff. But, given market forces, it is the right business decision to make. We simply don’t see a scenario that fixes the financial situation of the school in the near future.” Parents who wish to continue sending their child to a Catholic school are invited to attend an informational session at St. Monica on Wednesday, March 12, 7 p.m. At that session, parents will have the opportunity to learn about educational opportunities at nearby Catholic schools.
