Local Mass marks abortion anniversary

MIAMI | While lamenting the tragedy of the landmark Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion 35 years ago, Miami’s pro-life supporters also celebrated the fact that for every pro-choice Goliath there is an army of pro-life Davids with their loins girded for battle.

“We are also celebrating something here that is hopeful — a 50th jubilee of the Archdiocese of Miami — paying tribute to those who have labored in the vineyard helping to make this a thriving diocese,” said Barbara Groeber, director of education for the archdiocesan respect life office.

Groeber spoke Jan. 22 before a modest-sized group of pro-life supporters gathered at St. John Vianney Seminary’s chapel. The Mass, concelebrated by Miami Archbishop John C. Favalora and Father Jordi Rivero, chaplain of the respect life ministry, was aimed at those in the local pro-life community who could not participate in the annual March for Life in Washington, D.C.

The evening was dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the unborn, patroness of the Americas and also the patroness of the archdiocesan jubilee year.

“We are currently in the midst of a presidential election year. And what is one of the most pivotal issues in this election, possibly the most divisive issue of our day? Abortion,” Groeber said, asking people to consider why, after 35 years, the issue remains controversial, much to the dismay of the pro-choice groups.

She credited a tireless pro-life movement and the Catholic Church, which has never compromised its teachings.

“We know God is leading us and in the end, his will always prevails. This is what we celebrate tonight,” said Groeber.

Father Rivero reminded everyone that “animosity and conflict have to be resolved in our hearts before we can go out and solve them in our world.”

“Pray for our own deliverance,” he said. “Only through gratefulness to the Lord will we know how much we have been healed. … The Lord will do his work if we are faithful.”
